Last time I went to New York back in April 2002 I went all over Manhattan..and on the Lower East Side I found a fantastic haberdashery store..a real treasure trove ( cheap, with unique items)..where I was allowed to rumage though it all..I've since lost the address , and can't recall what street it was on (I go into a trance when I do 6 hours of walking/shopping and forget to eat and drink..so where on Lower East side it was I forget).
Anybody know some great haberdashery stores on Lower Manhattan, let me know!! Because, I badly want to return to that store.

..but to get to the point...Softie, I bet you can get yard really cheap down Lower East Side..prices seemed worlds apart from the rest of Manhattan.
(I feel a bit stupid giving you advice about where to shop for wool in NYC..given the fact that I have only been 3 times )

i will have to just take a walk and wander around and see what i come across...there are all these weird little places down there and usually really cheap...i forget about that all the time...

Only wish I could do it too..I could have kicked myself..they didn't that Visa or Mastercard and I only had about 10 $ on me..so I spend every penny I had (which wasn't nearly enough..because I wanted to many things) and walked from Lower East Side ALL the way back up to 57th street or something like that where my hotel was

Hey Softie-
All of the knitting shops that I know in Manhattan are very overpriced, because knitting has become pretty hip in the past few years and the prices reflect it. I buy in bulk, so I don't frequent the shops very often.

One place that I would recommend for great price/quality yarns is a place called Smiley's in Queens. It's a bit of a trek, but it is worth it. You can take the J( you live downtown, right?) all the way to the Woodhaven stop. It's on the corner of Woodhaven and Jamaica.

I copy and pasted a list of NYC knitting shops. I would not recommend Downtown Yarns on Ave A- the snottiest bunch I've yet to encounter. I can suggest the Yarn Tree on Bedford and S.4th? if you find yourself in willaimsburg. Erdal(303 5th Ave.,) is a distributor, but they sell to the public with no minimum. I've neard good things about School Products on Broadway, but I've never been there.

yes...all overpriced in manhattan...and i've been to that shop you mentioned...nothing for them to be snotty about...they had none of the things i was looking for...completely useless...

what about the lower east side as hanne suggested...have you ever looked down there?...

a sewing and pompom/knitting circle would be fantastic...i'm always looking for someone to do projects with...it's just so much more fun... you share ideas and help each other figure out problems when you're stuck...and it's just fun...i'd be up for that...but you know that means we would have to meet...right?...LOL...or are you thinking of a virtual group?...

maybe sugo would join us?...sugo?...
