Provocative / Offensive Ads #1

Oh...
What's more shocking than the image is that I'm shocked by the fact I'm still shocked by what Tom Ford produces.

now it is just complete gross (so the perfume become the substitute of the dick now? very fking brilliant)
u know, really, it is even worse then a real p*rn

As a visual concept, the ads are certainly creating reactions, so in that way, they work. But as something that will promote sales of the product itself, I'm not so sure. You don't get scent strips in p*rn mags (!). Scent is sensual because it lasts, it lingers. p*rn promotes speedy, disposable satisfaction. The perfume and the pictures... contradictory timescales.

Very very tasteless. I'm not so much offended by the sexual nature or objectification of the woman, but more offended by the fact that she looks so plastic. Women do not look like that! Gross.

those ads really offend me. not because she is naked, but because she is faceless. It is basically saying that women are not individuals but just sex objects for men

I completely agree and this is a massive problem in a lot of advertising.

I've had an argument with my boyfriend over overtly sexual advertising during one of my uber feminist attacks and he argued that most of those ads are women's products (clothes, jewelry and even that Tom Ford perfume).

Any thoughts?

Although i would looove to know who did her wax/lazer.. man ingrowns
I dont personally find it offensive just really cheap and tacky..more of a reflection on the person who had the concept than the message

Maybe we buy into sex just as much as men. Either that or they play upon women's desire to be perfect. We want to be the sexy women in the advert, and we want to be that thin, waxed, beautiful, plastic, etc

why the f**k would tom ford hire terry richardson???? that man needs to start trying to be a photographer and start directing p*rn videos.

^ i dunno, but i highly doubt the quality of the p*rn (if that ever happen), really.....

There has been so much chat here about these images, but to be fair they are quite ridiculous and shouldn't be taken seriously at all.

What is That??? it's so gross...and so not polite, so slimey and wet ads.. i felt that i'm looking penthouse magazine, not and ads...i guess Tom's just want to create something after that YSL M7 ads, fetured frontal naked man.

At least with the YSL M7 advert, Tom was drawing on the history of the house - from the iconic image of Yves himself nude, from decades ago.

I think that these new ads are the inevitable outcome of an advertising mindset that relies on shock tactics rather than visual wit to make an impact. Shock requires you to go further and further in each ad, until you reach the end of the road, and you've run out of taboos you can break with popular appeal. You start straying into exploiting taboos that start to disgust - but disgust never shifted many aftershaves.

There is a degree of wit in the adverts, but for most, I imagine it's outweighed by the mild revulsion. And if they're supposed to be arty... if Tom really believed in breaking visual boundaries, he'd become the film director he's always been talking about - but that never seems to happen. He's a salesman, pure and simple. And with these ads - his latest sales pitch - well, it bores me at the moment. Anyone can ask a woman to open her mouth for a photo. High production values aren't enough to raise it to a higher level where it becomes something "more" than the p*rn that inspires it.

And that is such a boring bottle shape. Not much original thought went into that either.

The photographer is Terry Richardson

Are you sure about that? I thought it was Marilyn Minter.

US beauty group The Estée Lauder Companies will launch Tom Ford for Men, the first masculine scent for the Tom Ford brand in October. The signature fragrance—said to be contemporary, yet classic— is a woody scent with hesperidic and floral notes in the top and heart. The composition is by IFF.

It comes in a fluted glass bottle with the name engraved on an 18-karat gold plate. The outer packaging is black with gold. The EdT is priced at $60 for 50ml and $85 for 100ml. The fragrance will be in Tom Ford Beauty points of sale in 16 countries worldwide. The ancillary line will launch in February 2008 and will include after shave, shower gel, hydrating emulsion and a cleansing bar. A more prestigious product, called Tom Ford for Men Extreme, will also join this line this year.

The advertising campaign, photographed by Marilyn Minter, features Tom Ford himself.

Although in another article they do talk about shooting with Richardson in Milan. I don't know

Those shots cannot be compared to the M7 ad. That was nudity for the sake of beauty, this stuff is HORRIBLE.

Tom, what were you thinking. This isn't what I expect from you, you can do better than that.
