^missania, you clearly dont know what you are talking about if you say she should shut up...maybe you dont like her, but it is a fact that the modeling industy does not even attemp to branch out and use black women...all women are beautiful and its a shame that blacks, asians, etc. are all missing from the covers editorials and ads. I think it would be nice to see more color on the runway too...usually its only a token black girl, like chanel, why there is no shortage of beauty in all colors. stcouts and agencies should be more open minded its the 2000's and we rarely see color, yet in the 80's 90's i think it was less 'taboo'

How do we know that?

I thought the evidence kimair presented was compelling that the color of the face on the cover isn't primary.

What I do believe is that most people *assume* it's about money, and *assume* that black faces won't sell magazines.

see i dont know and honestly even if this is 'reality' i personally wouldnt care who was on the cover or who was in the editorials... just as long as they're good. I dont think it should matter what race a model is... i think her ability decides if she can sell something.

black women (models and actresses) have sold magazine covers in the past...
there has been an effort by the fashion industry to make models "blank canvases," devoid of any personality...
that's actually not just true of black models, but all models...

I think it's a valid criticism, coming from a "fiery supermodel" or not, and the issue needs to be addressed. I saw more black models in prominent covers and ads in the 80's and 90's, I believe.

However, rather than overt racism, I think the reopening of the former Soviet Union and its bloc nations may be part of what has skewed the image toward a more (white) European angle. It's a girl goldmine over there, you know? They have no sense of privilege whatsoever, are generally so grateful for the work and disciplined about it--that they're white is beside the point.

im not saying mx campbell doesn't have a point, but this bothers me:

it sounds really egotistical, and there are other reasons why some people are put on covers are some aren't. her temper problem for one...

it's not fashion who is racist, it's "the audience".
fashion magazines is where the industry meets the people, and as (very) profitable companies, they respond to a certain demand.
i think that in the past years, the fashion industry has been very tolerant with all sort of people (whether it's sex, drugs, religion or cultural background we are talking about)
still think it's miss nuclear wintour who is racist? i certainly dont
