Great Belgian Photog.

After graduating from the photography department at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Raf Coolen established himself in 1991 as an independent photographer and was very soon working within the Belgian fashion scene. He was asked to shoot the first collections of Maison Martin Margiela and went on to produce some groundbreaking campaigns for top Belgian agencies. It wasn’t long before his talent was recognised in the whole of Europe and Japan. His work can be seen in magazines such as Weekend Knack and the Japanese Studio Voice.

Next to his commercial work Raf Coolen continues to express his creativity in personal projects as well.

This collection of images you might remember from the book Young Belgian Fashion Design. His images sort of stick in your mind as they're so mysterious(even when not working with Branquinho!)...they're quiet but there's something in them that leaves a lasting impression.

I do,yes!

Ronald was really the first and only fashion photographer in Antwerp to document the rise of all these the designers in the early years. Almost all the Belgian photogs going now got their experience with him.

I love his work as he's very transisitional. It sometimes looks different with every story or whomever he works with. The only distinct detail in his work is that there's always a certain crispness and clearness in it. The way he works with lighting is amazing.

Lovely pictures! I like the way he uses light, I prefer those first ones, that were a bit hazy, the three last ones are a bit too, I don't know, I think it might either that they're too sharp or else I don't like the color.
