NEW YORK — A quick glimpse at José Ramón Reyes' résumé reveals some of the most notable names in the industry — he had internships at Chanel and Helmut Lang under his belt before landing a position at Richard Tyler.
Reyes wasn't working on their design teams — he was overseeing marketing and press and, at Richard Tyler, served as the public relations manager. Today, though, Reyes the designer will show his fall collection at the National Arts Club in Gramercy Park.
"I think I was very influenced by all of those people I worked with," said Reyes, who at age 32 is embarking on his second season as a designer. "My collection is a mix of all of those sensibilities: the minimalistic movement I saw at Helmut Lang in the mid-Nineties, the beautiful embellishments at Chanel and the tailoring of Richard Tyler. It was invaluable. I've always wanted to be a designer."
Réyes, the collection, is about sophistication and accessibility. For Reyes, that means girl-meets-boy, in a preppy, sexy way. Margot Tenenbaum, from the 2001 cult classic "The Royal Tenenbaums," is a source of inspiration for Reyes, a native of the Dominican Republic.
"It's not exactly preppy," he said. "But it is about those preppy ideas, like seersucker, khaki pants, great shorts and piping. But I design for a girl of my generation. She's a literal girl who has a lot of refinement to her."
The fall collection consists of 40 pieces, including wool skinny trousers, T-shirts, flirty cocktail dresses, tops and outerwear. Wholesale prices range from about $80 for a T-shirt to $1,000 for a coat. Dresses wholesale for $300 to $500. Fabrics for the season include wool rib jersey, cashmere felt, silk velvet and silk taffeta and furs such as blue fox and raccoon.
The collection is available at stores such as Intermix in New York, Premium 93 in Dallas, Hillary Rush in Los Angeles, Beau in San Francisco, Vermillion in Raleigh, N.C., and Isetan in Tokyo. Reyes ultimately wants to open his own store.
"I think that's where the future is," he said. "I think it's the way to build a brand because you can show the whole look. That way, you don't have to deal with others and issues like chargebacks."
