Raquel Zimmermann, Queen of the Catwalks
The Model talks to VANITY FAIRLY ONLINE, what she thinks of her lean colleagues and who her favorite designers are.

The time of the Supermodels is past, say some. Yet Raquel Zimmermann, the blond Brazilian with German roots, is an actual such rarity: a Supermodel in the year 2007. From Chanel to Cavalli, she is seen in all the large campaigns; and is represented on the cover of Vogue just as she is on the catwalks from New York to Paris.

With a refined, fine, pale face Raquel radiates a certain class and intelligence, which nevertheless is changeable. Zimmemann is just as at home as the Femme with 40s style hair and a cherry red mouth in Valentino as well as the Urban Warrior in Balenciaga and Alexander McQueen; a Goth-Punk in Galliano and a sexy siren in Ungaro and Dior. She is the bride, whom Viktor and Rolf chose for their H&M-campaign, and also the girl, who opened the Chanel Cruise collection.

She is to be seen these days in New York Fashion Week, in the city where she lives, she loves it and lives - in the mean time with her boyfriend, the photographer Ruy Sanchez-Blanco.

Zimmermann grew up in the Brazilian city with the designated name Novo Hamburgo. "I had a very happy childhood, with an older brother and a younger sister. I was a rascal. Novo Hamburgo is very green and I was always able to play outside. Although my life is now very different, my childhood was stamped on me as i still love natural surroundings the most", she says.

She follows the classic Models story: At 15, she was discovered in Sao Paolo, went it to Japan, Paris and in the end New York. Her first breakthrough came, after years of Unwerth for the Italian Vogue photographed. "In 1999 i came to New York, I immediately fell in love with the fast dynamics of this city. Shortly after I arrived there, Steven Meisel saw a Polaroid of me and shot me for the cover of the Italian Vogue. From there, it started correctly."

Today she travels permanently and finds it "the best and simultaneously the worst thing about modeling. On the one hand I come and visit all these crazy places, on the other hand I am permanently away from my friends and family." Raquel is also privately interested in fashion. Your Favourite outfit? "I feel best in a Dior Homme by Hedi Slimane leather jacket, a white Gap-Shirt, jeans from JBrand and flat shoes by Marni or Chloe". Your favorite designers? "Thats Hard, but if I must decide: Nicholas Ghesquiere, Hedi Slimane and Karl Lagerfeld."

Zimmermann knows that "she has genetically a Models physique." In the clear text: she is very large and very thin. Nevertheless she finds the debate over the Size Zero models" not at all out of place: "One finally speaks about that. It is in the end possible, tp be thin, and to live nevertheless healthy. Unfortunately there are many Models that do not nourish themselves correctly or develop eating disorders. It is correct, that the industry isfinally paying attention to this problem."
