I swear by Creme De La Mer Moisturizer

and for not so pricy alternatives:

Nivea Creme (smells great)
Loccitane Shea Butter
Vaseline

i am on the verge of investing in this. so glad i found this thread. my skin is like parchment paper. is la mer really that moisturizing? better than anything else?

Lancome 'impactive' is really rich, and feels lovely...but I haven't used it for long enough to give a thorough feedback on it yet.

i think i tried this once and didn't love the smell. or am i confusing it with something else?

ps how did you get the font for your signature so small? i haven't been able to do that and am stuck with this clunker.

YES Creme de La mer really is that great (atleast I think so!!)
I would try buying it on ebay. There are trustworthy sellers there who specialize in selling la mer products. You can get the same thing for a fraction of the price. Good luck!! : )

Yes there is a very mild, unique smell to creme de la mer. You will have to try it yourself! The smell gets addicting though! There is nothing like it!

Nivea creme smells great too!

Shiseido's Benefiance line of creams contain lanolin....they are thick and
rich,
and may be to your liking. So does Nivea (the original in the blue
tub). They are all heavily scented, though.

I also recommend Decleor's balms- these are all oil, no water balms that can really do the trick for chronically dry, chapped skin. It's nice that they do not contain petroleum by products or artificial ingredients.

What's a good creamy moisturizer for dry skin? Any help would be very very appreciated.

it occurs to me, jlm, that we need to also consider our cleanser. i was just showering and about to use my kiehls cleanser when i opted for a shu uemura sample i had of their cleansing oil. it made a world of difference, i am thrilled to report. my moisturizer seems more effective now as a result. i will still buy/try some shea butter though.

L'Occitane sells pure shea butter in lovely tins. I think most health food stores and the like would sell it too. I like shea...I occasionally use it for my face in tiny amounts.

By the way, does anyone know which oils are most/least comedogenic and the different qualities of each of these oils?

lanolin / solid veg.butters / plant oils / mineral oils / petroleum based oils

My skin used to be extremely dry for many years while using rich oil-based products, but since starting to use a mixture of distilled water (or herbal water), glycerin, hyaluronic acid (sp?), citric acid, and urea...(all humectants, no oils) my skin has been feeling smooth and hydrated.
I heard adding oil decreases natural oil production and dries out the skin even more...I don't know...I guess it depends on the person and the oil...?Just my two cents.

i second that! onto my 3rd jar already i use it in the winter when my face gets so dry, my nose peels and the skin around my nose and mouth is red and cracked. i started la mer creme and my skin has not peeled in years. i highly recommend la mer. for people that have extremely dry skin, i recommend that they do not use any gel-type cleanser, use cleansing milk or creamy suds.
for those that said, la mer is shea butter, that is wrong...there is no shea butter in la mer. it is sea kelp.

didn't see a poster say la mer was shea butter (is it "shay" or "shay-a"?), but i assumed it was very diff. because of the consistency. anyway, tracked down a l'occitane mini tin and have been putting the wax (even when warmed, it's waxy) on my face 3 times a day. my prob. isn't peeling, cracking or redness, just tight tight tight so the point that moving my face makes inta-wrinkles or something. it's very weird. awaiting my new humidifier. can't tell if the shea butter is doing anything besides sitting on the skin. does la mer sink in?

A rich face cream that I love is Nuxe's Ultra Comfortable Face Cream. I have found it very good in the past when my skin has felt tight or dry, and it didn't clog my pores or anything.

Its not that expensive over here in Europe but if you come across it I think it is definitely worth a trial!

see post #9 by pinky...i just dont want anyone thinking we pay 110.00 for shea butter...la mer sinks in after you "activate" the moisturizer, you have to scoop some onto your palm and rub until the moisturizer turns clear...then pat onto face in which it will sink in...sometimes my skin is so dry, in 5 minutes i have to do it again. if you dont warm up the lotion, it will just sit on your face.
an astronaut designed la mer for burns, so it has to be good...astronauts are smart

I was a la mer devotee but now use Nuxe Creme Fraiche. It's very comparable to la mer without the pricetag and I use it all over my face and neck. I also remove my makeup with DHC deep cleansing oil - this stuff rocks!
