I thought this might be a nice idea: a discussion where anyone can post their specific criteria for the kind of publication they would like to follow, and others can respond with their magazine suggestions!

    To lead by example:
I regularly read U.S. Vogue and less regularly Australian Vogue. While I'm forever impressed by U.S. Vogue's depth in relation to their editorial coverage of current events and issues- and of course their fantastic focus on fashion and its insides, which is basically unbeatable- I can't help but sometimes feel a little disconnected from the material; which is obviously angled to appeal to a 30+ female demographic.

Could anyone recommend me (a 19 year old, male, New York City bound, aspiring fashion designer and soon-to-be student) a more progressive mag, with an equally awesome focus on fashion- although maybe a bit more focus on up & coming designers/labels as opposed to established global brands-
which still retains an emphasise on the presentation and coverage of political, day-to-day and current day issues relevant to it's readers?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
    Happy TFSing.

Does the magazine have to be in English?

Neither is in English, but if like your fashion presented in an artistic manner Numero and Vogue Italia are good choices.

Sometimes I like the latest fashions presented in an unfettered way and I find that Numero again and certain eds in Vogue Paris are good on that front and I have really like some of the minimalist eds that have appeared in AnOther but it is only published two or three times a year (I think).

There are magazines that I may not like from cover-to-cover, month after month but they always manage to produce an fantabulous editorial or overall issue, the magazines that fit that bill are Vogue U.S., Vogue Russia, Vogue Korea, Vogue Germany, Vogue China, Vogue Nippon, Marie Claire (especially the Italian edition), Harper's Bazaar (especially the U.S., U.K. and Russian editions), V and W and some others that I am probably overlooking.

Unless you plan to subscribe to a magazine or two which is definitely understandable for economic reasons, my recommendation is that you take advantage of being in NYC and go to a bookstore or newsstand that stocks international magazines and spend some time browsing through the inventory and buy the magazines that tickle your fancy that month. You should also stalk this sub-forum because I am pretty sure there will be a magazine that may not impress you overall, but there will be a single photo or ed that you may want to "collect" on your hard drive.

^ Since you are going to be living in NYC (lucky you!) I would check out the shop Magazine Cafe (they have a website magazinecafeny.com where you can look up its location) because they have large selection of international magazines. You can browse and figure out which magazine's are right for you.

I would suggest i-D Magazine, they aren't afraid to use newer designers in their editorials, and they have a lot on current issues as well as lots of interviews. I've only gotten two issues (Gisele off the newsstand, Gaga by subscription) and I can say that 6 issues of these would be WELL worth $55.

Not sure, if you heard of a magazine called Monocle. Its from the same gentleman, who started Wallpaper*.

The magazine is more business and politically oriented. They do have interesting fashion articles. In Issue 37, that comes out tomorrow. There is a Q&A with Philip Lam. A style directory thats about 40 pages long. Talking about different designers and other various things. Plus an interesting 3-4 article on designers trying to keep production in Europe and elsewhere and not in Asia.

The magazine is worth the A$12.95 (C$10).

I've never heard about Monocle before but maybe I should keep an eye on it as Wallpaper* is one of my favorite magazines. Thanks.
