Rick Owens F/W 2017.18 Paris

I find it almost a bit pointless for him at this point to do separate men's and women's shows when they both look so similar to another. He's often used more or less the same fabrics, colors and certain styling concepts in both his men's and women's shows and a lot of pieces that form the base of a Rick Owens wardrobe are rather unisex, why does he not just embrace that more or otherwise use the opportunity to try something different in each of these collections?

I love how sculptural he's getting, with Panos twisting and folding and stacking to his heart's content. But another part of me wants to see what something looks like for wearing.

Oh my God, I can't take it anymore... I hate this collection. Looks like a sloppy outcome from a draping class for amateurs on weekends.

"So students, take your vintage coat, cut the centre back seam, pass the arm through it, twist it" bla bla bla

I am huge Rick Owens fan, he is a master of volumes, but not for the last 24 months.

I want this kind of Owens.

Let's face it, some of the models look like they're wearing duvets and garment bags. I can't see a point to this collection, it just looks like big blowsy mess of fabric.

This is how I look in winter when I wrap myself with duvets

actually, i think the clothes are all good.

problem is, we don't know how it looks like...

something wrong with the styling... a little too much...

cause Rick Owens already a little too much

The color palette is gorgeous, and I don't hate it...but I'll echo other sentiments that I miss earlier Rick...not that I'd want him to go backwards, but I recall his collections from around 2004-2006 and how there was a sensuality, a sex appeal even, and languidness and glamour that has been missing from his work for a while now. I also miss his casting choices from that period - more adult looking models wear his clothes better and more authoritatively (although I admit this casting here is better than they usually have been for a while).

I don't mind the built up pieces and styling, but after seeing the Loewe collection, it's clear that a lot of designers, including Rick, need to work on balance a bit more...throw into the mix some shockingly straightforward but perfectly done pieces and looks...it adds so much more depth to a collection. It makes the farfetched looks somehow all the more powerful and all more compelling to put them in context with more realistic propositions.

Clearly, those runway outfits will be in magazines and editorials. Maybe now Rick Owens is confortable enough to make "joke" presentations to show us how much he likes draping duvets on his dummies in his atelier. We all know he is living on his sneakers, leather jackets, tshirts, harem pants and he established a great business now.

The last seasons have been more "shows" than catwalks because he is not worried about doing mistakes. He can afford to do such unrealistic shows. I won't be surprised to see him sending naked girls one of these days and people will still clap.

And I agree, I miss his early castings. I miss his early everything when he was a freaky niche designer and not a successful (bored?) businessman.

Inspired by helmutnotdead going through some of the more recent past Rick Owens collections, looking at some backstage pics of this, the colors and material combos have me so transfixed. They're from a photographer Sonny Vandevelde's website but I can post them here in a bit for convenience if anyone cares in the future

Tyrone is lucky and better be smart about this before he hits the wall of Rick's standards for being "young and beautiful" because there's like no way he can be that intriguing of a person for Rick keep him around for much longer. I can just imagine them in Venice with Rick making Tyrone pose for nudes all day while Tyrone is going on and on about the most amazing caviar pizza and gold leaf donuts he saw on instagram. And then with Ludovic closing that menswear show... This is a really long midlife crisis lol.
