PSYCHEDELIC FURS: Rick Owens may no longer be creative director at Revillon, having parted ways with the furrier after it was bought in December by Yves Salomon. But the former Angelino can’t keep away from the fuzzy stuff. He will debut a fur collection — called Palais Royal — when he shows on the Paris runway this Sunday. The line will count some 50 pieces, with a mink coat costing as much as $30,000.

Interesting news, I'm definitly looking forward to seeing what he'll do.

Awwh, I loved Revillion because they had someone like Owens behind it. I don't particularly like fur, but Owens does a good job at making it tasteful and interesting. I wonder what he's going to do with the Revillion licenses he owns. I assume he'll sell them if he hasn't already.

thanks for news Softgrey

This is what i heard! I heard he may take over! .... i knew this was coming :ninja:

i don't know how i feel about gareth pugh...:ermm:...

Fur tends to be a very sensitive entity, but Owens works it in a creative way...I remember the first time I saw a Revillon piece in real life....it was at the Ikram Boutique here in Chicago...I drooled lol

I think it may be a great idea actually....we see Gareth's uncanny creations, but this may give him leeway to do something serious and restrained...we already know he's creative, and I'm sure the company and business execs will put limitations on him where it doesn't get out of control...but I think this is a positive change! We can now see how Gareth Pugh can channel his thinking into a very high fashion brand, while keeping the image (which will take restraint if he wants to keep the buyers buying)...I think his last collection and usage of fur gave us hints of his impending position...but I heard about him working there a few months ago...I hope he does become creative director!

Rick Owens, despite how difficult his looks seem, tends to translate into modern and wearable clothes, that's even more of the case with the furs. Gareth can make a good costume, but for the several collections he's had I could only pick out maybe 10-15 pieces (out of several dozens) that could be a realistic, sellable, garment. And there's even less room to goof off when you're working with animal hides. Who knows

Yea I agree, hence I think this is the time to see what Gareth is REALLY worth...can he channel his creativity under limitations like Mutterlein mentioned and still maintain a high quality look and opulence? Or will he prove inefficient to designing under a commercialist based fur label (Unlike RTW Fur is VERY expensive and Im sure execs would push sellable pieces more so than anything other, having a huge stock of things buyers dont want will certainly get the designer AXED)....only time will show us.

does this mean that rick's designs were not making money?
i mean--they sold the company and got rid of him so that;s what i assume...

but the collection had his signature all over it...
no matter who takes over...it's likely to change dramatically...

Not necessarily, sometimes in business various functions may generate capital, but if investors/backers notice other talent, they may bring it in as to make even MORE money..e.g. Tom Ford’s situation. Gareth does have a lot of hype around him at the moment. I think he will harness this hype and use it as motivation at Revillon (if he does become creative director) it takes more than just hype to keep designers going once all the smoke clears, that’s why I say he will work whole souled at his newfound position and make amazing pieces. Comparable to stocks in the stock market, hype settles down and then true talent is revealed- the makings of a great designer.

Also sometimes a business may want to liquidate something because they can perhaps put their capital into another investment...(A good example of this is Prada...I HATE PRADA!! they ruined HELMUT)

^I hate Prada too for that and other reasons! But on topic, there are certain times when people can use fur and the result is such an artful job that the fusion of the animal and the art are incredible. But there are other times when you just think, all that death for this? Rick Owens often walks the right side of that line. I agree with Mutterlein "And there's even less room to goof off when you're working with animal hides"

I also think he may need restraint so as to avoid the heavy criticisms of animal groups...awkward usage of fur may stir some really heavy protests....even Galliano knows when to stop sometimes...I think Pugh's plastic sheaths may come in handy for all the red paint he may get....:ninja:

I was wondering if this restructuring would interfer with Owens' and Pugh's friendship/collections...does anyone think Owens could indirectly dictate certain aspects of design even though Pugh is in the game? How I love the speculation....

To be honest I don't think fur could ever be tasteful. And anybody who wears fur or uses fur should be permanently kept away from any animal. My cat is so beautifully silky and soft, gorgeous chocolate coat (balinese) and I just think..wow some people actually want to kill a creature like her and wear it. It continues to amaze me.

But sadly he'll find a big market I reckon. With fur being so controversial, you have those with lots of money who disregard the ethical aspects of the trade and use it as a social and moral snub. So this could be a smart business move, especially considering that fur is cheap to obtain and can increase in value as much as 8000%.

If his previous line wasn't doing very well then I think this is a smart niche market with so many other designers dropping out of the fur race.
