Scotsman Ian Phin and Colombian Maria Restrepo are fashion's action painters under the label Rohka. The name comes from Rohk, the bird in The Thousand and One Nights, which says a lot about the duo's lysergic intentions and belief in color as emotional splash. The playful designers softly sculpt, twist, and fold fabrics in eye-popping prints to obtain organic forms charged with an idiosyncratic energy that's the perfect counterpoint to any urban grittiness. "Rohka was born as a purely creative project for ourselves. It's now a full-time job, but the essence of being on an independent path has remained the same," says the couple, who met over ten years ago while working for Romeo Gigli. Set up initially as a textile consultancy studio, with clients ranging from Marni to Versace, Rohka, as a line, began with a bunch of scarves that quickly led to a full womenswear range. A Rohka piece has the accidental allure of something born out of arty chaos, and in fact, the designers love those "happy accidents" that add an unpredictable dash of magic to their work. The label sells at Biffi in Milan, Laura Urbinati in Los Angeles and Destination in New York.
