The internet seems to be bare of Gigli's work - I'm finding this incredibly intriguing, my tutor has told me to look at his work from the late '80s, early '90s, can anyone provide any information on this mysterious designer?

Here are a few images I've found:

he's a genius...
he did one show where he used all redheads...

my fave collection of his was called 'woman of the forest'...

all his designs are quite romantic---
they remind me of shakespeare---romeo and juliet---
also- his colour palette was very sophisticated...
deep rich complex colours and textures in his work...

i stil have some tops that i got on a trip to paris in 1992
they are like tube tops but there is a panel attached that wraps around and around your torso and then there are two buttons so you can fasten the end of the wrap.
he did this in mesh and netted fabrics as well as stretch jerseys...

he had his heyday around the same time as claude montana and rifat ozbek...
they are contemporaries...
unfortunately- these guys are all pre-digital era, so there isn't a good record of any of their stuff...
your best bet is probably to try to find editorials that feature their stuff---
look for models from that time-
yasmeen ghauri, nadege, etc...many of their editorials regularly featured the work of gigli...

i guess gigli sold the company and his name along with it in one of those early business blunders that designers made before we all realized what a bad idea that is...
i don't know if he is able to design under his own name or not at this point...
i think he was designing shirts at one point ...i have some vague memory of that...

anyway-
he's a genius---your tutor's right...

i have a lookbook somewhere from that era---
if i can find it i'll try to take pics or scan it or something so you can see it...

:flower:...

Romeo Gigli was in a league of his own. Fell in love with his extraordinary aesthetic the first time I saw it.

Tim Blanks once described a Gigli's presentation as "Byzantine princesses sleepwalking in a dream". I think that's the perfect summation of his style. And at a time when brash, over-the-top shows and supermodels were everywhere, Gigli's shows and style was the antithesis of loud fashion, and over-exposed supermodels. His vision of women was gentile, rich and almost of another time, but timeless, and always sensual. Haider Ackerman's vision of women immediately reminded me of Romeo Gigli.

It's unfortunate Gigli sold his company and faded away. He's such a strong and creative individual untouched by trends, I think he would still have a hold on fashion if he were designing today, much like Azzedine Alaia.

softgrey: Gigli reduced to designing only shirts is a tragic story, since we all know he's capable of so, so much more. Here's hoping he makes a comeback and show all the new overhyped, trendy designers how it's really done.

Darn, I used to collect photos of his collections back in the day...he was wonderful.

He had a very specific type of woman as his inspiration...natural, organic, mystical and almost androgynous, like a wood nymph...

anyway CD none of this helps you I know...

He did some really intriguing work - it's amazing how little he's remembered now. But Alexander McQueen interned at his studio, and you can really see some of those infuences at work (particularly in McQueen's late Nineties shows.

He also did some stunning work for Callaghan - like this gorgeous dress from Summer 1990

I only found out about him recently through his work for Callaghan. Last night I found out about this interview he recently last year for Encens, which must give quite an insight to his work and probably current life. Encens usually does these long and detailed features on designers so it's probably worth ordering it.

Anyway, Encens featured his Deborath Turbeville ads and also a quote from his interview.

1988 BY DEBORAH TURBEVILLE

‘Callaghan was dripping with baroque embroidery, Afghan jewellery, echoes of Byzantine churches, Russian ballets and Paul Poiret. For the first time, I was re-opening the trunks of my past, of everything I had hidden away in my deepest reaches, and which had pushed me into fashion’.
- Romeo Gigli [interview featured on Encens No. 24]

Thank you softgrey, Phuel & Melissa for all the info and thoughts on it. It's incredibly valuable for people like CD and me.. that are a bit behind on gems like this.. with basically no work to refer to on the internet.. and I'm completely dependable on internet to find out about people like him.

1972projects, welcome to tFS :flower:.. if you have pictures or texts to share, please post them in here. Personal links are considered self-promotion and we have to remove that.

Here's Isabella in Romeo - this is quintessential for me:

heeehee...
there was a time when i wanted to BE isabella rosselini ...

:P...

love that stuff you posted MP and all the pics added by user500 and runner...
thanks guys!
:flower:

you would def like him MP-
it's got an antonio marras vibe for sure...along with a little of that ETRO ethnic thing...
but with his own very specific silhouette...
*always very narrow or sloping shoulders from what i remember...
which was especially unique at that time...

wow....all this emotion. his clothes seem to be a remarkable vehicle...

Sorry for the mix-up, hopefully these load OK this time - Gigli consulted for Callaghan for a while, here's a beautiful image of a dress he did for them in 1990, shot by Albert Watson.

Also, a snap of some of Gigli's design team that year, a group which included Alexander McQueen.
