Rosamund Pike had a blissful sparkle in her eyes as Joe Wright, her director boyfriend, escorted her into a private supper in Venice.
Joe, whose films Pride And Prejudice and his masterpiece Atonement emphasise the power of his story-telling abilities, had a romantic secret that he just had to share with those closest to him, many of whom had gathered in the splendid dining room of the Bauer Hotel overlooking the Grand Canal.
As Joe looked around the table, he nodded to his mother, brother and his artistic accomplices Keira Knightley and James McAvoy and declared that proud as he was that Atonement had been chosen to open the Venice Film Festival, he had some news to top it.
He revealed that en route to Venice, he and Rosamund had stopped by Lake Como - where he proposed to the 28-year-old actress.

Romance: Rosamund Pike and film director Joe Wright
"I have asked Roz to be my wife and she, thank God, said yes," he revealed, as he and Rosamund embraced.
The news was greeted with applause - and some tears (of joy, I hasten to add).
The couple will marry next year after Wright finishes shooting his next picture in Los Angeles - a drama starring Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx as a down-and- out musician.
Rosamund will soon accompany her fiance to LA, where he'll begin preparing the movie to start filming in January.
"As you can see," Joe told me, "Roz seems pretty happy about it - and so am I."
In fact, Rosamund, who met her husband-to-be when he cast her as Jane Bennet in Pride And Prejudice, has never looked happier.
Right now, Joe's the hottest movie director in the UK, with Atonement being premiered in London on Tuesday and it being mentioned, even at this early stage, as a major Academy Award contender.
Already some - and by that I guess I mean me - are hailing it as the film of the year. The bonus is that it represents the very best of British film-making talent, both in front of and behind the camera.
