I'm not sure if it'd be a faux pas but the royal family have always been wearing hats to special events so it might look a bit weird if they didn't.

I think it would have been a faux pas, as I think it's part of the hoi polloi way of dressing (plus the aforementioned way of selfexpression...or something)

They wear hats! Funny Hats! Big Hats! Hats!

i really liked some girls navy blue velvet jacket & skirt.
it had lace trim. really pretty. no clue who it was ?
