Picked it up today. Broke the bank at $30, making it even more expensive than Purple. Turns out I was misinformed--there are only two covers, both by Inez & Vinoodh, one with Hilary and one with Irina. Both are in this thread already.
Am a little disappointed with the issue. The front of book section "The Obsessions" is extremely weak this time around, comprised of nearly 100 pages of randomized and scattered editorial and indulgent self-portraits by Suzanne Koller, Willy Vanderperre, Miranda July, Scout Niblett, Alasdair McLellan, Ann-Sofie Back, Roger Deckker, and others. It was annoying in that it had no focus or structure. Would be great for one photographer to do the entire section, as they've done in the past. And that's about all we get this time for front-of-book.
The Inez & Vinoodh editorial is 28 pages (!) and it is some of the most compelling and original photography this season. Very beautiful and fun. Also a story with Felicity Gilbert and Ben Nicholson by David Armstrong. Cute but not Armstrong's best work. Alasdair McLellan turns in an extremely weak story featuring Flavia de Oliveira. And Terry Richardson has a story with Elise that is pretty lifeless and dull.
What really shines this time is a back-of-book department that is highly original and intelligent. It starts off with a series of (unretouched?) beauty portraits of tacky Liverpool club girls by David Sims that is very powerful. Helmut Lang includes pages from his diary and an intimate self-portrait. Interviews with Graydon Carter, Stefano Pilati, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Malcolm Gladwell, Pascal Dangin, Vince Aletti, and others. Every interview is so smart and prescient and exciting. Can't wait to read.
So I'd say C+ for the fashion, A for the interesting and inspiring articles.
