Show it, then sell it on Ebay
In November 2002, designer Julian Roberts of Julian And Sophie, auctioned Nothing Nothing, the label he'd created and nutured since 1999, on Ebay. The precedent was set and now designers are opting to auction parts of their collections on Ebay straight off the catwalk, before buyers have even had a chance to decide the fate of a collection. In New York this week, designer label Proenza Schouler, showed their autumn 04 collection and next week many pieces, including shoes designed with Manolo Blahnik, will be offered to Ebay bidders. Proenza Schouler has stockists on the East and West coast and the designer reckons the Ebay auction will help publicise the label to Middle America. It is thought that 50 items from the autumn 04 collection will be offered at below retail prices. Watch out on Ebay for British designers selling their showroom wares at well below retail.
