Kang, based in Beijing, has quickly ascended the editorial scene in China, posing for the country’s editions of L’Officiel, Harper’s Bazaar — and T. And, as for the runway, she debuted internationally at the Louis Vuitton cruise show, held in Kyoto in May, and then walked in New York for Valentino resort. If she weren’t modeling, she’d be studying business logistics. She is also a calligrapher.

Every week, Bazaar's booking team highlights one name to note, from the industry's best-known faces to girls who are just starting out. This week, we turn our attention to Sijia Kang.
After featuring in editorials back home in China, Kang is now making her mark on the international market following her appearance on Louis Vuitton's Resort 2018 catwalk.
At shows such as Valentino, Armani, Dior and Rodarte, Kang's confident and cool walk made a big impression; and her versatile look should take her far. Blessed with a refreshing modern beauty, perfect jawline and the kind of physique that was seemingly destined for the catwalk, the 19-year-old has plenty of potential. "Sijia's look represents everything that is modern and relevant to casting today," says Daniel Robson at Premier Model Management "She has hit the industry at exactly the right moment and is set to soar."
Kang has shot look books for top fashion houses including Marc Jacobs, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Altuzarra, and is set to make waves in editorials, too. We talk to the fresh face about her hometown of Xi'an maintaining a positive attitude and fellow supermodel Liu Wen.
How were you discovered?
"My mother agency noticed my picture on [the Chinese micro-blogging platform] Weibo last September and contacted me."
If you weren't modelling, which career would you pursue and why?
"I am actually at university studying e-commerce and logistics management. If I wasn't modelling, I'd perhaps be going into an office job."
What would you say has been the highlight of your career so far?
"The Louis Vuitton 2018 Resort show, it was my first one outside of China."
How do you spend your free time?
"I like travelling, seeing different cultures and people, trying different foods – that can be very funny – and making many friends."


Do you have any travel tips for those visiting your hometown?
"My hometown is Xi'an, it was the capital of the Qin and Tang dynasty, it's a historic and cultural city with some interesting places like the Terracotta Warriors. Most importantly there is so much delicious food that you must try."
What are the three products you can't live without?
"IPhone, Kiehl's lip balm and Avène lotion hydratante."
What is your favourite form of exercise?
"To be honest, I don't really exercise. I'm really bad at sports but I know that I should do them so I've recently tried to start."
What is your dream shoot?
"I am dreaming that one day I'll shoot with Steven Meisel and Tim Walker."
If you had to wear only one designer, who would it be?
"Altuzarra."
What kind of advice would you give to new girls to the industry?
"I am new as well, but I think everyone needs to have a positive attitude. Modelling can be a tough industry, sometimes thousands of girls compete for one job, so you can come so close to being confirmed but not getting it. But this is the industry we are in and it can happen."


Is there a model's career that you admire and why?
"Liu Wen. I think all Chinese and Asian models admire her career. She created lots of 'firsts' as an Asian face and has had so many achievements, she's really opened doors for Asian girls."
What is your life motto?
"Never do things by halves."
