German photographer and director Stefan Heinrichs lives and works between Berlin and London and shoots sophisticated editorials, portraits and profile films for a variety of fashion and culture publications. His work is characterised by its monochromatic play of light and shadow and its pared-down honesty, especially in the close-up studies of faces that capture a sudden moment of expression forever on the page. Often shot in a studio environment, Heinrichs’ stories are full of beauty and spontaneity and free from other distractions.
In recent times Heinrichs has photographed Charlotte Gainsbourg fooling around in her debut collection and also shot portfolios of promising fashion designers, actors and up-and-coming gymnasts from Germany. He has a fascination with skilled individuals and a talent for bringing out their personalities in front of the camera. Heinrichs’ directorial work for Nowness has allowed him to explore the creative worlds of Dutch product and interior designer Marcel Wanders, who shared his love of the drone, and German industrial designer Konstantin Grcic, who explained his passion for the office chair. It has also taken him all the way to the royal town of Hua Hin in Thailand, where he attended the annual King’s Cup Elephant Polo tournament and met the “Kru Ba Yai” elephant spirit men that open proceedings by blessing the animals.
Heinrichs’ editorial clients have included Wallpaper, Vogue Germany, Port Magazine, L’Officiel Hommes Italia, Interview Germany and Der Spiegel, and he has shot profile films for Nowness and AnOther Magazine.
