FAREWELL STELLA…

Today was the last day at American Vogue for Stella Greenspan, Grace Coddington’s assistant.
For those of you who know me well will be more than aware of my admiration (obsession) for The Cod – I have her i-D cover framed on my wall and her memoir is proudly on display – and will be sick of hearing me go on, but how could I not take this opportunity to gush some more? #sorrynotsorry
It started with The September Issue, the 2009 documentary that brought Coddington to our attention, consequently making us take her to our hearts. The part where Anna Wintour tells the camera man he needs to go to the gym and Grace then makes sure his stomach isn’t photoshopped out, especially, makes you just want to reach into your screen and give her a cuddle (and stroke her hair…come on, we all want to know what it feels like). It is evident how passionate she is about her job and how emotionally involved she gets. The fantasy world the onetime model turned super stylist creates, is not only for the reader, but for herself too. Combining exquisite garments with a strong creatively stimulating narrative, and from time to time a famous face from the industry, makes up her distinctive style that we love so much. Without Grace, American Vogue would not be what it is today.
Sally Singer on Grace: “Grace is without question, the greatest living stylist. There is no one better than Grace…She comes from the idea that fashion is this world of play and make believe.”
Who can forget the Alice in Wonderland shoot?
Upon reading her memoir you learn her life has been somewhat of a tragedy. Her dad died when she was young, she was in a car accident where her eye went straight into the wing mirror resulting in five reconstructive surgeries, she miscarried – and could never conceive again after that – and when her sister died, she took it upon herself to adopt her nephew and bring him up. All this is stated as a matter of fact rather than for sympathy reasons. The majority of the content is focused on her career and happier times. The chapter on Didier is short and sweet which makes them even more charming and adorable as a couple. It is also nice that some public figures do still want to keep aspects of their life private. Grace was an unsung, insiders hero for a while but thank goodness she was thrusted into the public eye, something she has previously admitted she is not too fond of.
So, now that Stella has gone, where can I hand in my CV? I have a cat…
