Steven Meisel - Photographer

Steven Meisel is only great when he is over-the-top-creative. Whenever he does those groundbreaking editorials like "State of Emergency" - his work is absolutely phenomenal.

Otherwise, he really isn't that great. The amount of boring, cliched fashion editorials that Meisel does for US Vogue....it really sh*ts me up the wall. Its just boring.

True ... that his work for US Vogue is pretty much the same old, same old. But you need to understand that that it is not really under his control.

My firend was told by an editorial assistant at Vogue, that Ms. Wintour chooses her photographers for their consistency and abilibty or produce the same sort of editorials time and time again. For each editorial, Ms. Wintour chooses the photographer pretty much based on his/her "signature" style of shooting and expects them to produce that specific look. She does not like to have them change their style and does not allow much creativity.

thanks bette....
it definitely seems that anna is trying to follow some sort of formula of what is expected and what sells for vogue rather than attempting to push any sort of creative or artistic boundaries...

US Vogue is "safe" and anna wintour intends to keep it that way...

i think that meisel is smart in following what she wants because i'm sure it allows him to bring in a steady paycheck from vogue, and to also gain a higher profile

True!I dont think he should be blamed for the lack of creativity in his work for Us Vogue. Its all in editor-in-chiefs hands. They are the ones that are in control and and have the last word!
Its sad actually that Anna dosent allow him to be more productive, but thats the way it is.

But boy does he get to play at Vogue Italia instead  and i think his results are very good, not always but damn often.^_^
