Tatler May 2020 : Priyanka Chopra by Jack Waterlot

Namaste.

anyway, the Vogue Paris art direction knock-off is laughable

If more magazines were like Vogue Paris, I'd buy more magazines.

So, does every female celebrity married to a male celebrity get to talk about the husband only? I'm so tired of these prearranged PR gibberish. Are there no real interviews nowadays? Couldn't they ask her about the Indian politics, scandal with the Paki girl from the audience, comparison between Hollywood and Bollywood and who knows what (I'm not a journalist so I don't)?
I was going through some vintage Serbian/Yugoslavian magazines and was taken aback by the rawness and the scrutiny of the interviews with the celebrities of that age. There were awkward questions and you know what - a celebrity had to give an answer.

With the prevalence of cancel culture, I think we are stuck with celebrities sticking to stereotypical topics. There will be a few big names who’ll go out of the box, but the rest, will gladly talk about their marriage and hair in fear of being cancelled because of their own views.

Gone are the days where a celebrity can be liberal but remain to be pro-choice. Gone are the days where a male celebrity can come out as a conservative and discuss today’s politics. Gone are the days where celebrities can come out and defend their friends who were falsely accused of sexual assault because of the fear of being bashed by the die hard, me too or bust faction of the #MeToo movement. Gone are the days where a celebrity can freely opine that he supports same-sex civil unions, but would refuse to call it marriage in deference to the religious significance of the word. Gone are the days where they can support a candidate without fear of being cancelled by their own base for not being progressive enough. This is coming from a liberal person myself.

This is why celebrities have been settling for these kinds of interviews. Might as well this than be cancelled.

I wish they had made that black and white the cover

Imo there are two parallels, Priyanka only talking marriage while shying away from hard-hitting issues, and Jameela Jamil whose entire dialogue is driven by social politics everywhere she goes. I'm bored with both!

Don't like anything about the cover. Not the pageant hair, makeup that looks like it was done by a Youtuber, nor the dress which looks like it was lifted from Imelda Marcos' wardrobe. Massive step backward for Tatler because they've been doing great covers lately. And why the sparse art direction? Their appeal is actually the coverlines unlike most magazines.

What a depressing culture we live in... hate this world.

Re: cancel culture, safe/boring interviews, Scarlett Johansson is the only young A-list celeb (or Tree) one can count on to be unfiltered it seems.

"Beauty Pagaents and Feminism are not mutually exclusive"? She strikes me as the kind of "feminist" who toes the line and prefers the "middle path" rather than taking a stand. While at the same time banking on the strong-feminist selling point. It's truly sad that the first major export from my country has to turn into such an unlikeable, problematic character with very less character. Rant over.

Never been a one for Priyanka Chopra on magazine covers (expect US Vogue's January 2019 issue) but this looks perfectly fine, and I'm certainly down for minimal cover lines (will be interesting to see if this is indeed the final cover). And at the very least it's an improvement from last month's offering!
