i stained a crochet waistcoat today and am waiting for it to dry.

i also stained a soft pink silk dress that I have never worn (its too similar to my skin tone) but that didn't turn out so well because i accidentally left one bag in the pot! i may go over it again to see what happens.

haha i am not going have any non-stained clothes/accessories left at this rate!

today i bought a gorgeous lilac dress but i also wanted it in this sage green, so i took one of my baby blue tops and dyed it green, it turned out perfectly.

then i did some underwear, a dress, and some shoes!!!!! they are all different colors so they all turned out differently. and i also used Red Zinger Herbal Tea (Celestial Seasonings) on one of my tops, its an intense ruby color so it was so gorgeous!

this thread is awesome, i am so glad someone made it!

Before I go on a staining rampage, what is your experience with washing these? Will the colors run in the water and color other clothes? Does the color get affected by detergent? Thanks!

(and so am I! I realised that actually this colour is a bit hard to wear if you have a yellowy complexion like mine . . .)

the pink turned really dusty, Susie. It was a sort of dark blush, but because I left the bag in, there were big patches of brown, so i sort of buggered it really). other botches included some linen trousers that just didn't take the stain too well. i think knits seem to soak it up best.

What an interesting concept! It made me curious about the technique, and I learned that stainless steel can also be tea stained. I see the application used mostly on decorative pieces like wall sconces, light fixtures and some light furniture.

I also found tea staining used on sea shells, wood, ceramic, bamboo and ivory and other organic materials. Here is a chess set of ivory.

^Yeah I'm worried about the stainless steel too... The pots I have here are stainless steel--I want to use them for tea dyeing, although they're not mine What else can I use that won't get stained? I have pots lined with teflon... I wonder if that is alright

The tea shouldn't have any effect on the stainless steel if you're only doing it the once. Our teapot is stainless steel and it took months for it to colour. If you're really concerned about the pots, boil the water in the kettle or in the pot, put the teabags in a plastic bucket, pour the water on the teabags.

You could buy a bucket for pretty cheap so you wouldn't have to worry about staining it.

I've got some teabags steeping on the stove right now, I'm going to have a go colouring some singlets.

I just bought a vintage lace dress that I think was tea stained... because when I handwashed it, all the color came out, turned the bucket the color of light tea and now it's like 3 shades lighter... I liked the color beforehand, maybe I will stain it again.
