Thandiwe Newton

Give this woman a serious epic period film! lol She's stunning.
She could obviously play Cleopatra(or Sheba or Nefertiti), and I always thought she'd be great as Napoleons's wife Josephine.

Thandie Newton's movie makeover

Thandie Newton as you've never seen her before! The actress comes over all Cleopatra to launch the Virgin Media Shorts 2010 Competition

We're more used to seeing Thandie Newton strutting down the red carpet in a selection of edgy dresses by hot British fashion designers.

But the star underwent something of a dramatic makeover to promote Virgin Media's Short Film Competition. Thandie ditched her fashionable frocks for this exclusive photoshoot to be made over as 1910s sex symbol Theda Bara playing Cleopatra in 1917.

Thandie will be one of the judges on the panel to decide which short film will win the Virgin Media Shorts 2010 Competition along with British directors Mike Newell (Four Weddings & a Funeral) and Duncan Jones (Moon), film critic James King and executive director of digital entertainment at Virgin Media, Cindy Rose.

Commenting on her role as judge in the competition Thandie said: 'The history of the short film and its early stars isn't something that's well known or documented, so to kick off this year's Virgin Media Shorts we wanted to do something that would commemorate one of the early legends like Theda Bara – she was a true, avant-garde screen heroine.'

Indeed, Theda's acting has informed the sort of talent Thandie is looking for in her role as judge: 'her spirit and passion is in essence what I'll be looking for as a judge in this year's Virgin Media Shorts entries. I'm honoured to be part of the judging panel alongside industry greats, and I'm excited to be helping unearth what could be the next big thing in British film making.'

^ OMG she is so amazing.
She's the Empress of the Red Carpet.
Never puts a toe wrong.

I have to say that I'm a little disappointed. It's a nice dress, but she's never usually afraid to mix things up. She always has exquisite taste in jewellery, though.

She looks extraordinarily chic in the latest candids. It's the perfect casual, relaxed ensemble.

^At first I wasn't so keen on the 'gown-ness', but's its grown on me. The shade is gorgeous on her. I really love the jewellery, and the close-ups.

^Cosmocat, I feel the same. Her make-up is divine too!

Not that crazy about the dress besides the plum color is gorgeous, but she is always stunning.
