The Buff Head Band Look - Backcomb

I've always wondered how to get the Big buffed up curly hair look with the head band. Is it velcro rollers or curling iron? and what about the buff from the back? plz plz plz someone gimme some advice thanksss alott

you have to backcomb it a bit on top and tease it with mouse and hairspray then brush over it a bit, and then for the curls, big ole curlers, not the heat set ones....or low heat if you must then take out, flip your head then place headband and spray again with hairspray...sometimes bobbie pins work too to keep curls in place

Can you tell me how exactly to backcomb my hair? do i put mouse on the parts i want to backcomb? and how do i get it to be smooth and not messy (like the pic)?
