THE FASHION FRINGE WINNERS

TEN semi-finalists for the second annual Fashion Fringe competition were named yesterday. After a six-date whistle-stop tour of the UK and Ireland, with designers such as Julien Macdonald, Roland Mouret and Christopher Bailey seeking out the best talent from over 200 "quality applicants", ten names have been picked for the next round. Borba Margo, Abbot & Cochrane, Mary Donoghue, Stephen Harper, Emilo De La Morena-Marques & Jose Rodriguez, Erdem Moralioglu, Modern[ist], Kirsty McIver, Jojo & Malou and Claire Shaw will now face a select panel of fashion buyers, press, designers and academics in face-to-face interviews to prove that they have the business acumen as well as the aesthetic passion to make it big. "Our tour reinforced my conviction that there are designers out there with real talent and drive," said Fashion Fringe founder, Colin McDowell. "2004 winners Basso & Brooke have set an amazing precedent, and our aim is to build on the energy and momentum generated during that year. With such a high standard of entries, Fashion Fringe 2005 will be showcasing some exceptional finalists on the catwalk during LFW in September and I am confident that they will soon make their mark on London and even in international fashion." The names of four finalists, one of whom will subsequently go on to win the £100,000-worth of business support, will be announced at the end of the month. (June 14 2005, AM)
