The Indie Film Thread

Gincat,

I will definitely rent Down by Law. Tom Waits and John Lurie... that's all I need to convince me. I last saw John Lurie on a few episodes of Oz playing a prisoner... looking a little older, but still very handsome.

for those who understand this 'indie' concept....
is the film 'the sea inside' considered to be 'indie'....??...

i dont know, i think it's not hollywood-made but it's not considered 'independent' in Spain or spanish-spoken countries, more cultural rather than 'indie'.

can i just say...the whole 'indie' term has a different connotation in other countries..

This is for all of you that enjoy watching a high quality independent film of deep emotional value or beautiful life stories.

I want to see:
"Nobody Knows" - Has anyone seen this film? Good?

www.ifcfilms.com has a description and trailer.

Seen nobody knows. Bought it off ebay a few months ago. The movie is incredibly heartbreaking. It's just very very heartbreaking. Amazingly acted and so natural that you feel like you're watching a documentary. Great Film!

Last Life In The Universe

A Thai movie by Pen-Ek Ratanaruang, influenced by Wong Kar Wai, with Tadanobu Asano (Ichi The Killer, Zatoichi) and cinematography by Christopher Doyle (most Wong Kar Wai films, Hero). A sublime, dreamy fraction of two lives running in parallel until fate brings them together as their worlds fall apart. If you like movies by Wong Kar Wai, Michelangelo Antonioni or Sophia Coppola, you mustn't miss this film.

I don't think there's a set definition for "indie" films. Some fims are financed independantly but on a large budget, others are financed partially by studios and patially indepandantly. I consider "indie" to be anything not mainstream hollywood.

Yes, you're right..I can't believe I had mistaken it with Stalin!

However...no..shouldn't be moved to cult films, cult films are films with a huge obsessive following. Indie films are simply films that tell a wonderful story.

I agree, Garden State was wonderful.

I also want to see Y Tu Mama Tambien :ninja:

Those are some of my favorite films!!

I would HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend the following:

L HOMME DU TRAIN/MAN ON THE TRAIN (French) (**reminds me of Sliding Doors which is one of my favorite Indies)

BREAD AND TULIPS (Italian)

THE CUP (Bhutan)

Is 'L'homme du train' the one with Daniel Auteil? by the same director of "The Girl on the Bridge" (also great BTW)? I may be mixing it up with something else... But if it's the film I'm thinking about than it's quite good.

For ANY film questions, I'd suggest checking out www.imdb.com or www.allmovie.com

Thank you so much! I'll check those out! I've seen The Taste of Others, and I really liked it, so it seems like we have similar tastes^_^

Love Me If You Dare is the most recent on my list of favorite French movies! I LOVE it! I haven't seen the other two, but I have a list to check out next time I go to the video store. Recent favorites over mine are
L'Auberge Espagnole
Happenstance
Bon Voyage

I've seen Spanish apartment and Bon Voyage! Loved them too!! I MUST check out Happenstance.

There was also a recent film that I enjoyed. Can't remember the title but it was about a man who refused to leave the comfort of his parents' home and they were trying to devise ways to kick him out without hurting his feelings.

I also liked Brotherhood of the Wolf (even if it scared me and the story wasn't particularly great) only because of the awesome eye candy (Samuel Lebihan yum!) :P

Delicatessen :D

I thought Good Bye Lenin and Happenstance sucked :ninja:

If you want to see a MUCH better version of Happenstance, I suggest 12 Conversations About One Thing.

Also, I suggest Italian for the Beginners - such a sweet film

I thought it was "13 Conversations About 1 Thing"? If we're refferring to the same movie (which I think we are because the one I'm talking about had a similar theme as Happenstance) I preferred Happenstance- I liked the tone better, but I guess it depends on your tastes. I still haven't seen "Goodbye Lenin". "Delicatessen" was really good, but I liked "The City of Lost Children" better. It's by the same director, but it's quite uniue (and beautiful IMO)

 doh! I got my numbers wrong  Hmm, interesting difference of opinions. I thought the script was much better for 13, more complicated and grabbing. I liked The City of Lost Children too :flower:
