The 'Outfit Look-Alikes' Thread

I don't think it is clear cut that the Valentino designers were inspired by Miu Miu, even dating back to Alessandra Facchinetti's tenure, mining the Valentino archives has been a key part of a lot of the ink that Garavani's successors have gotten. Now to me it is entirely plausible that if they were deciding between Silhouettes A v. B v. C., a consideration may be that Silhouette A has been road tested by another designer. In general, I think that inspiration that is 100% organic (or even archival) is the exception and not the rule for even the most directional designers, I suspect that a trend report is more likely to be the baseline inspiration for a collection than a stroll along the Champs-Élysées. For example, look at the Fall 2010 RTW shows - directional designers like Miuccia Prada and Louis Vuitton created 1950s / 60s inspired collections and so did other less directional designers like Loewe and Giles Deacon, I don't think that is a coincidence.

BTW, I was recently looking at a video of an Elie Saab Saab show that pre-dates Miu Miu and he had a similar girly silhouette so perhaps Miuccia got her inspiration from Elie Saab? :innocent:

I'm going to defend the Miu Miu/Valentino comparison because while the basic proportions of the dresses may be references to the sixties, would the designers at Valentino have done them if Miuccia hadn't?
It's difficult to say, but if their previous work is any indication then there's a pretty good chance that they might have.

It may not settle the "did they/didn't they?" question, but I think these looks should at least prove that they didn't just pull a trend right out of another collection.

I think it's another case of great minds thinking alike. It's a dropped hem, it's been done before, and it will be done again.

I guess I did go a little overboard with Valli and you're right, but I just don't think they have one creative thought in their bodies, hence the exaggeration.

You can add Snejana's and Magdalena's outfit from Viktor & Rolf S/S 2010 :)

I don't think that you could call these look-alikes, since this is a common silhoulette.

^ I agree. A lot of the things posted here are just trends that have been reworked by different people.

I think you could call the Lanvin and Gaultier look-alikes. Both of them share a similar silhouette, which isn't un-common, but both of them also use fur to trim the outline of the sleeves which enhances the rounded effect.

If I'm honest I did think of that V&R collection as soon as I saw the Gaultier.
I highly doubt he's ripped them off though.

This custom-made Jason Wu gown is almost identical to this 3.1 Phillip Lim Spring 2008 dress:

I remember posting this on Diane's thread a long time ago. I thought it would be interesting to share this.

^ Nice one.

Whoa, that match of Wu and Lim is totally similar. Just the color and the length are different.

Don't think we've seen much men-women looks :p

^What is even the point of copying something like that, assuming the second one was "influenced" by the first. There are a million different ways to put black/gray/blue on a shirt, does it really have to be done in exactly the same way? Unless it has some ~other meaning I don't know about, lol.
