What in your opinion is the perfect trenchcoat, in terms of cut and colour?

I own a black one, which I love but am also thinking about another one. Just not sure if I should get a creme or a gray one? Which one of those do you think is nicer?

I like trenchcoats with a feminine touch like the one Viktor and Rolf did for H&M (I have had the sleaves cut since I took the photo ) and my black Designers Remix with pleats.
Burberry is of course a nice classic, but I find it a bit boring. In the autumn they had some more feminine versions, one with a very elegang black buckle and one with golden buttons, but I was disappointed when I saw them live. The black buckle was so heavy, that it wouldn't stay in place, and the golden buttons seemed cheap and tasteless. Then came the coat they made of laces, and THAT was beautiful

i think the trench from burberry is the one that suits most body types.

Well, I don't think it goes very well with my small highwaisted hourglass shape. The cut really makes me look like a box, and that is why I find it a bit boring (on me). I wish I would find a vintage Burberry, on some of the old models the cut fits better to curved bodies. Saw a nice one in a luxury second hand shop recently, but it wasn't my size.

i was just going to say, that i think the opposite, that they look great on hourglass figures, but i have only tried on (my own), and its vintage, so that could be the reason

personally, i have never found a trench that works for me...
i am too high waisted and the belt is just in the wrong place and looks funny...
...

while i love the idea and the look of a classic trench...
i am still looking for the perfect one..
since i am on the petite side ( 5'4")..i do think that a shorter one would be better on me...and the short trench has made quite a comeback this season...
so maybe i'll find one this season???

has anyone seen a good short trench?
i see girls wearing them but i don't see them in the store...

what would you classify as a short trench softie?
mid-thigh? anything above the knee?
or even shorter? like hip length?.... would that even still be classified as a trench?

what works best for me trench-wise seems to be those that hit a few inches above the knee, maybe a little longer than mid thigh.... (i'm almost 5'5")

i had bought a fornarina winter trench a while back but have since given it away because it just overwhelmed my figure...
was a little too long and the material was thick pea-coat style/felt-ish sort of fabric so it weighed a TON...
plus i bought it online and it ended up being a little too big

i have a bright pink/fuschia andrew marc trench that's great for spring/early fall and works well as a rain coat...
kind of flashy because of the bright color, but it's fun and has a great fit

i sort of love this Comme jkt that is more alternative...
it's a cross between a trench and a blazer and it comes in really dark navy---
i tried it on at the beginning of the season...
but that was the day i got the Balenciaga booties and i try to make it a policy not to buy more than one $1000 item per day...

it really reminds me of old school balenciaga ( the original designs)

i was at barney's today and checked on it actually- but it's all gone...

it's' so amazing in person because it's got a blazer pattern sewn into it which cinches in the volume...
and gives you great shape...
you can sort of see the lapels and make it out if you look...

it's ingeneous...
it's like wearing a little blazer or cardi over a voluminous top or dress...
but it's all cut into the pattern of the garment...
truly brilliant design...
and very subtle...completely chic...


i felt like a princess when i put it on...
you know how some clothing items just do that to you?...

sorry mods, i bumped this mostly because i'm looking for a trench for my boyf. and wanted an alternative to the Burberry classic (though I told him "you want a trench ? go and get it @ Burberry, silly boy !" lol)

and especially because there are a lot of trench threads .....

I would really love to find the perfect classic trench, but my issue is my height.. I'm 5'4 and tend to live in flats, which makes it difficult to find a trench that sits right and does not drown me..

I bought a lovely camel coloured Malene Birger trench in Winter 08 but I knew I had to have it shortened when I bought it - it was ankle length on me I had every intention of taking it to Selfridges to get it cut but then realised that it would really lose something special if I had it altered...so I ended up selling it.

At the same time I bought a fishtailed trench by Jovonna London, in navy blue. I've worn it a lot and find it is perfect for my frame - it hits me mid-thigh and the fishtail detail makes it quite playful and young. (I've attached photos of the jacket in black)...

I would really love a camel/beige coloured trench as well as a black one in more of a classic style - Burberry possibly. I think what it might come down to though, is getting the jacket altered to suit my height...

it looks nice in the color pictured but i'm sure the navy is amazing (i'm a HUGE fan of navy)

the sort of double collar with the soft, almost scarf-like drape right around the neck and the sharper edges of the lapels is so great...

i love pieces that are successful subversions of a classic

luluposh i think that fishtail detail in the back definitely makes the coat...
that mid-thigh length works best on most people i think...
those super long versions can be tough to pull off...
often just ends up looking voluminous..
like too much coat for one person

softgrey, I stopped by and they said it all had sold out and that then they had been able to reorder and restock the style since the sellout was earlier this season. but they found out on the computer all from the second production has gone again except the greenish one which is left here and there in japan and is a different green from the one in the pic. sort of yellow-green.
this green was available only for the first production.
