The Plus Size Thread - All are welcome!

It's been a little while since I've been here. But I wanted to post information about Bradley Bayou's Science of Sexy.[/] Bayou used to design for Halston and he's done beautiful stuff for Queen Latifah and Chandra Wilson (as I posted much earlier).

As fashion books go, this is one of the most realistic I've ever seen. He breaks down body types in 48 different forms, and women in full/plus is not neglected. He does short, average and tall plus body types and gives "celebrity body doubles." These include Camryn Manheim, Roseanne Barr (who usually looks horrible), Emme, Mo'Nique, Trisha Yearwood, as well as people who I hadn't heard of, such as Jill Ragee. I'm a tall/full/triangle type, BTW.

My only mild complaint on this is for a formalwear expert, he didn't really address gowns. I'm biased, I admit, because I'm on the hunt for a gown to wear to my sorority's key fundraising ball in March.

Classic1908, thanks for letting us know about the book. I saw it on Amazon.com but didn't look at the reviews, now I'll order it based upon your recommendation. Please let us know what you eventually find for your formal event. Take Care!

LaurieAnn, I think you will like the book.
And I'll be sure to inform everybody about what I'm going to choose for the event. I have just over two months to work on this, and the work starts tomorrow.

People's Choice Awards:

Chandra Wilson (the headshot is good. The rest of the outfit isn't cute, but I can't find a link to it.):

Hostess Queen Latifah -- the bow placement on the dress doesn't really work, IMO:

I don't know why so many women who are going to be flash photographed wear satin...if there are any rolls or pulling of the fabric, it gets picked up by the flash and amplified - usually somewhere grossly unflattering like the hips. Ever wondered why Beyonce sometimes looks a lot bigger over the hips than usual? Usually cos she's wearing satin!

Kudos to the Queen for that dress. I can overlook the bow because everything else is spot on, but that suit that Chandra wore was plain awful. Looked like fancy pyjamas!

Satin really doesn't work on the plus-size figure very well most of the time because it's stiff and like on Chandra's jacket sticks out instead of flowing around the body. I rather like Queen Latifa's dress. She looks like she has a nice waist so I wish she had emphasized that instead of her bustline.

Oh, I received my copy of Science of Sexy. I really his four (easy) step method of determining body types. I'm a short/full/rectangle. One thing I really like is how the author dresses the same figure at different weight points so a woman can see how to accentuate her figure at different sizes.

I'm glad that you like this.
Now as for the dress, I'm having some issues. I found a traditional ballgown dress, but it is satin, so I have questions about it. But I will soldier on because I simply can't afford to have anything made.

Classic, I realize this is a bit of a personal question, but have you found good undergarments? Some good body smoothers may help alot. Just have to make sure your dress is not cut so tight that lines show through (which is often an issue I have.):flower:

^^
It's not too personal at all. I have to look for a decent body smoother because my body is video-girl disproportionate. If something fits my breasts, it may not fit my butt and thighs.

Manolos Shoe Blog has an article posted about some wide calf boots and while reading through the comments I noticed that someone had mentioned a company called Duo Boots which make boots in both shoe size and calf circumference. They are a British company so the sizes are in UK measurements, but even with the exchange rates the prices are fairly reasonable for semi-custom boots. There selection is quite nice. I believe they ship to the U.S. though I didn't specifically check. The website is: duoboots.com

i have not read the whole thread, so i dont know if you have talked about it, but where is the line from being normal wight to being plus size? i myself is a 42, uk 14/16.

Classic, thanks for the pictures!

Chandra looks so much better in her dress then her violet pantsuit and I just love Jennifer Hudson's look. To me, America and Sara are more a curvy body type but not really true plus-size (not that I mind the photos of them, they both look lovely). Their bodies to me look "normal and healthy" as opposed to the over-dieted looks so popular with most actresses.

MssTrine85, I think that on this thread "plus size" is used as a catch-all phrase for those of us who may not fit in designer wear, most of which is only sized up to a US 12, which is a UK 14. Welcome to our thread whatever your size!:flower:

America and Sara are definitely healthy, but the Hollyweird people call them plus. :innocent:
Bradley Bayou has America as one of his short, full-figured (not plus) celebrity body doubles in his book, FYI.

Well isn't that too much. But yes, I can see Hollyweird (love the term) considering them plus-size just because they aren't bony. Really sad when you think about it because to my way of thinking these women look like they are taking care of themselves and not dieting (or smoking) themselves into oblivion.

It is pathetic and just proves how pervasive some aspects of our culture are. Frankly, I'm just glad that a lot of the thin-is-in craziness didn't really exist to the degree it does now when I was growing up (60s and 70s). I wasn't what you'd call "full-figured" until I got in my mid-30s and my 'tabolism took a nose dive. I do exercise, but I can tell you, I'll never be a stick insect. And that's OK. I just try to find the best things I can buy for my figure, etc.

I just bought this top, but I'm not sure if I made a good choice. I like it, but I live in Vegas, and it won't get here for another week so I don't want to be stuck in a warm top for summer. What do you guys think?
