The Sunday Times Style March 24, 2024 : Gwyneth Paltrow by Coliena Rentmeester

I will never understand the cult around this woman. She's like the ultimate Karen of celebrities, a plane jane that promotes anti-science and new-age bullsh*t that could potentially kill someone. She's a cultural hazard for sure, plus, I never thought she even looks that good as people make her out to be.

I often hear things like this, but I’m curious as to what backs it up. Has harm ever come to anyone from following her advice or buying her products? I don’t follow Goop closely, but my impression is that it’s pretty harmless and generally encourages healthy behaviors.

This is such an overreaction ("cultural hazard?" "potentially kill someone?" lol...what?). Plus, it's a rather stale and boring take. I'm not totally on the Goop train, but the content on her site is not much different from other big mainstream lifestyle publications, and some of it can actually be quite interesting. I have a feeling that most people who criticize it (and her) in such an extreme manner have probably never read anything on it. G Label is pretty good for what it is, too. Elevated (expensive) basics for rich moms in Montecito or Brentwood. It's a market she knows well, obviously, and has its place.

She was selling crystal sex toys at like premium markups. Those things are hotbeds for bacteria. Go with tempered glass instead.

It seems like she doesn't really veto what she sells on her site, there have been recalls of stuff that she admitted to not knowing what they were.

I'm neither here nor there with her, she's comes across as bland and trying hard to appeal to the masses.

Oh my god, I don't know what to say but lol. She does seem to know her market well, and that's not a compliment.

I’m sure there’s a team selecting items, I assume she isn’t personally handpicking the hundreds if not thousands of products sold over the years. If there were recalls, that sucks. But I mean, every grocery store, car dealership, and big box store in the country as sold products that were subsequently recalled. It’s a hazard of doing business, and certainly as a reseller of products manufactured by others.

Her selling crystal sex toys seems very tongue in cheek and not at all controversial, to me. Was there any actual issue? Did a customer of hers develop a life altering illness after being duped into shoving an infected goop crystal into their private bits? I mean, the outrage is so manufactured. Probably encouraged by Goop, too. I think because her brand doesn’t target vulnerable populations and most of the wares are frivolous, it’s a mistake to take any of it too seriously.

And "not giving a f...". Such a lady 🙃
That's actually what I respect about her, though. She has built a company centered on something that interests her (wellness) as a way to transition from acting and does not give a flying f--k about the mountain of nonstop criticism she gets.

But sounds really funny (13 year old me) that the editor chose that line. Anyway, I miss the 90s Gwyneth. One of my favorite it girls from that era for sure.
