i searched and couldn't find a thread on them so i thought i'd start one :flower: even though they broke up they are possibly my favourite band and are one of a few bands that really inspires me daily. i think richard ashcroft is so underrated, imo he's a genius and his solo work is awesome. my favourite songs are 'sonnet' 'the drugs don't work' 'lucky man' and 'on your own' does anyone else here like them? ^_^

btw apparently limp bizkit have used their chorus of 'bittersweet symphony' in their new song  it makes me feel a bit ill

I like them too. ^_^

I agree about Richard Ashcroft being underrated.

Bitter sweet symphony

Cos' it's a bittersweet symphony this life...
Trying to make ends meet, you're a slave to the money then you die.
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down...
You know the one that takes you to the places where all the veins meet, yeah.

No change, I can't change, I can't change, I can't change,
but I'm here in my mold, I am here in my mold.
But I'm a million different people from one day to the next...
I can't change my mold, no, no, no, no, no, no, no

Well I never pray,
But tonight I'm on my knees, yeah.
I need to hear some sounds that recognise the pain in me, yeah.
I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now.
But the airwaves are clean and there's nobody singing to me now.

No change, I can't change, I can't change, I can't change,
but I'm here in my mold, I am here in my mold.
And I'm a million different people from one day to the next
I can't change my mold, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
(Well have you ever been down?)
(I can't change, I can't change...)

(Ever been down)
(Ever been down)

The verve were awesome. I loved 'the drugs dont work'. Haha, this is gonna sound lame but the lyrics ' like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown' used to make me cover my ears because i didnt want to think of people drowning cats

Their video for Bittersweet Symphony has got to be one of my favourite music videos, ever...

I've always found it funny though, how their biggest song was the only one they didn't write the music for.

 The Verve. I only own Urban Hymes, but have promised myself that by the end of the year, I'll purchase another album by them.

I remember getting Urban Hymes for X-mas the winter of '97. One of my top five albums ever. Every song on there is lovely...

My favorite song by them?
"This Time"

They only song I know from them is 'Bittersweet symphony'. The song is OK. But the videoclip is so cool.

^ If you like BS, you should check out Urban Hymes. You won't be disappointed if you like Bittersweet Symphony... :innocent:

I  the Verve. Richard Ashcroft is amazing :flower:

'Lucky Man'
Happiness
More or less
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
Oh, my, my
Happiness
Coming and going
I watch you look at me
Watch my fever growing
I know just where I am

But how many corners do I have to turn?
How many times do I have to learn
All the love I have is in my mind?

Well, I'm a lucky man
With fire in my hands

Happiness
Something in my own place
I'm stood here naked
Smiling, I feel no disgrace
With who I am

Happiness
Coming and going
I watch you look at me
Watch my fever growing
I know just who I am

But how many corners do I have to turn?
How many times do I have to learn
All the love I have is in my mind?

I hope you understand
I hope you understand

Gotta love that'll never die

Happiness
More or less
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
Happiness
Coming and going
I watch you look at me
Watch my fever growing
I know
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my

Gotta love that'll never die
Gotta love that'll never die
No, no
I'm a lucky man

It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my

Adore adore adore their songs! Stunning and timeless are the words that come to mind when thinking of them. And it sux so much that they split. :( Is Richard still doing music? He sung on Liva 8 so he's still around.

the last i heard of him is that he's working on a third cd. i love his solo work. imo hes such a hottie..even though hes old enough to be my father. the guitarist nick mccabe also had a band called the shining but i think they've split. their song 'i wonder how' is gorgeous :)

a bit ?

I haven't been exposed to much of his solo work. I love "a Song for the Lovers", but listened to a couple of other songs off that same album and was a bit disappointed. Can anybody recommend any songs that he has that may be more in-tune with ASFTL?

song for the lovers is a gorgeous song..i love the violins in it. the only let down of his solo work is his cds aren't consistent in quality, but he does have some great tracks. songs that are closest to ASFTL is 'check the meaning' and 'man on a mission', they are really good. i also love 'new york' 'buy it in bottles' 'man on a mission' and 'running away'

i love this line from 'man on a mission' (he is very opposed to drugs i take it!)
'then we've gotta pay for the drugs to take it away, and then you're gonna find there's nothing with your mind, that you don't already know, that you ain't already seen, do you live in a dream?'

tell me what you think of the songs erin!

i'm seeing coldplay in june..fingers crossed he comes to australia with them! his new album is called 'keys to the world' and the first single for it is called 'paint the night with colour' apparently the whole album is just richard and a guitar. the video is floating around somewhere...

I'm so in LOVE with Richard Ashcroft ,he's my soul mate. All of his songs are the greatest ever ,solo or with the verve. His new songs are great too!and coming out soon if anyone is interested.

I'm such a big fan of The Verve... I love their earlier shoegazer stuff... and Bittersweet Symphony is probably my favorite song of all time!!!
I can listen to it at any moment... when I'm happy, sad, angry, hopeful, hopeless....

So glad to find more fans of their work...
here are more favorites:

She's a superstar.... this song got me through some very hard times...
Gravity Grave
Slide Away
Lucky Man
Blue
History
On Your Own
Sonnet
Drugs don't work
Weeping Willow
This Time

i love 'history' so much Mary-Anne! ah i can't even explain...it would be probably my most favourite verve song and of all time too

History
I wander lonely streets
Behind where the old Thames does flow
And in every face I meet
Reminds me of what I have run from

In every man, in every hand
In every kiss, you understand
That living is for other men
I hope you two will understand

I've got to tell you my tale
Of how I loved and how I failed
I hope you understand

I've got to tell you my tale
Of how I loved and how I failed
I hope you understand
These feelings should not be in the man

In every child, in every eye
In every sky, above my head
I hope that I know
So come with me in bed
Because it's you and me, we're history
There ain't nothing left to say
When I will get you alone

Maybe we could find a room
Where we could see what we should do
Maybe you know it's true
Living with me is like keeping a fool<

In every man, in every hand
In every kiss, you understand
That living is for other men
I hope you know that I am me so come on
I'm thinking about history
And I'm living for history
And I think you know about me
Cause I am

And one and one is two
But three is company
When you're thinking about the things you do
And you're thinking about the things you do
I want to tell you my tale
How I fell in love and jumped out on my bail
I hope you understand there's more in a smile than in a hand
In every sky, in every kiss
There's something that I might have missed

Why am I going to
A place that now belongs to you
But you were weak and so was I
Let's pick it up, let's even try
To live today, so why not smile
Don't dream away your life 'Cause it is mine
Is that a crime (repeat) this life is mine
The bed ain't made but it's filled full of hope
I've got a skin full of dope

i don't know if those are the exact lyrics cause i got them from some site but it is an amazing song.

and their music is definitely one for getting through tough times ;) the end of 'sonnet' makes me so happy

The Verve were great, but I don't like Richard Ashcroft's new work.
