No Bono this time around?

Miley Cyrus and Robert Downey Jr.?

Thanks for posting. :flower:

And how do they decide if person is 'influential' enough to be on their '100 most..' list?

Karl:heart::flower:
and i dont think some people deserve to be on the list...miley cyrus is the most doubtful one.

Ok. So I'm not really a big Miley fan, but, I don't think anyone can really deny the fact that she is quite the influence on young girls (and even some boys, I suppose). Most girls I know anywhere from ages 4-12 or so, adore Miley and want to be just like her. Miley most certainly is an influential person for that particular age group, anyway. ;)

I think a lot is taken into consideration. I know that once it's narrowed down to some 200 (??) candidates, people can vote on the internet on how influential they are. I know this because I wanted Radiohead to be on this list, and voted a lot for them...

What exactly has Mariah done to deserve to be called "Influential"?

Miley Cyrus at least has an army of pre-pubescent female minnions to justify her being on the list...

How isn't Mariah influential? All one has to do is look at many popular artists ranging from Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis, Christina Aguilera and the beat goes on. Then there is that very popular show not sure if you have heard about it called American Idol where many Mariah-wannabes have made total fools of themselves by trying to replicate her sound.

Thing is as D.J. Clue said 'Mariah often imitated ,never duplicated'. I think that speaks volumes on her influence and why she made Time's List.

^I'm sure Jason Castro with his dreadlocks wants to be just like Mariah Carey.

The list is put out every year. What has Mariah done in 2007 that has been especially influential? Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis, Christina etc etc are all old news, so is Mariah. Why not put Whitney on the list, or Minnie Riperton, Mariah's own biggest inspiration. The inclusion of Mariah seems arbitrary.

I don't know if Jason Castro wants to be like Mariah but I am sure he wouldn't mind her success and I am sure he respects her talent.

Mariah has been especially influential for the past 18 years. A little added bonus for 2008:

Mariah Rules Charts With 2008's Top Debut

Scores career- best 463,000 first- week sales with E=MC²

With Her 11th album, E=MC², Mariah Carey has been breaking records left and right. The disc moved more than 463,000 units in its first week- 50,000 sold online- setting a new sales mark for 2008. It's also a personal best for Carey. It's a big album, and people are going to love song after song after song." says Jermaine Dupri, who produced five tracks on the disc. "Her last album {2005's The Emancipation of Mimi} sold 7 million, and I think this one will do 10." Carey has sold 160 million albums worldwide during her 18-year career.

E=MC² has done even more to secure Carey's status as a legend: "Touch My Body," the album's first single, hit Number One on Billboard's Hot 100 chart, marking the 18th time she's occupied the top slot. (Elvis Presley had 17 Number Ones, and she's hot on the heels of the Beatles who lead with 20.) "Mariah has added another plateau of success to what has become her virtually unapproachable track record," says L.A. Reid, executive producer of E=MC² and chairman of Carey's label Island Def Jam.

As she crisscrosses the globe promoting the album (including stops on Oprah, Good Morning America and SNL) Carey herself has ben overwhelmed. "I can never put myself in the category of people who have not only revolutionized music but also changed the world," she said alluding to Elvis. "For me it's about saying "Thank you, Lord, for giving me the faith to believe in myself when other people had written me off."

~ Austin Scaggs for RollingStone Magazine

Lmao @ Mariah being old news. Too funny. Kelly Clarkson stumbled due to politics, Aguilera not so long ago had a baby & Leona Lewis burning up the charts right along Mariah. Yet regardless the aforementioned have been influenced by Mariah along with plenty others- even those who may not have the best vocal ability (Rihanna) have cited Mariah as an influence.

Mariah has great respect for Whitney & Minnie Ripperton (who she has cited as being the originator of the whistle notes when many tried to pass it off as just her thing) yet her respect and their influence doesn't take away that Mariah is also influential.

You understand why Miley Cyrus is listed but is confused as to why Mariah is on the list? It's cool if you don't like her or whatever but come on now...

^Actually, the E=MC2 CD is exactly what I had in mind. The album came out in April, compiling the list is based mostly what happened in 2007. If they put MC on the list a year from now, I would entirely understand.

Also, considering the amount of glamour salons for 6 year girls popping up in malls around the country, it's difficult not to understand the influence of Miley Cyrus, despite how much I dislike her.

So because of the supposed time-line you don't get why Mariah is on the list? Mariah is an influential artist point blank period. It doesn't matter whether its 2007, 2008 or 1990. I didn't disagree that Miley is influential my point is that you get why she is but you don't for whatever reason understand why Mariah who is a Living Legend was chosen also.

You can't pinpoint a certain period of Mariah's influence because since she has been on the scene it has been everlasting. For whatever reason they chose to put her on the list this year rather than next year or in past years doesn't make a difference because she is not a fad- she doesn't have to have an album out to be considered influential. I think it's clear to see why she was chosen. *shrugs*
