Town & Country November 2019 : Laura Dern by Tom Schirmacher

In general, I think she's very unlikeable, but this cover definately doesn't help.

I didn't know that about her, that she was unlikeable. I feel like you no longer have a leg to stand on if you dealt with a neutered Billy Bob Thornton in any capacity.

My eyes instinctively looked for the one or more cringeworthy coverline which T&C is famous for, never expected it to apply to Laura though. Huge misstep from her team.

Cover is a non-event, cheek looks wonky. Overall I'm getting InStyle Bride vibes from this, not in a good way.

The quote is from her character on Big Little Lies, it’s not something Laura said of herself. Though given the pride this magazine takes in displays of extreme wealth and conspicuous consumption, it wouldn’t be at all off brand if this was an actual quote from a T&C coverstar without a hint of irony.

I actually find this elegant, she’s never been the prettiest of the typical a-list starlets but this is really nice and quite honest in terms of how she looks in real life.

Maybe I’m biased because of her being a David Lynch muse but in general she is such a talented and perhaps even a bit underrated as an actress and most of the commercial audience do not know her outside of Jurassic Park...

She’s probably getting an Oscar nomination this year, so maybe more audiences will take notice.

Well if she's gunning for a nomination? Good luck getting it, because that coverline is vulgar and could count against her.

I've read (with some assistance of Google Translate) in Hungarian InStyle that she didn't allow her US InStyle cover and editorial to be reprinted by other editions, and I thought, what a b.

Far be it from me to come in defense of the Hungarians (imagine!), but she wasn't exactly the most 'profitable' in that cast.... so it's wasn't a loss for them.

I've always loved the quote from BLL, but for someone who never watched the show it could be pretty misleading and inappropriate. But then again, this whole magazine feels like a snobbish monthly newsletter for a rich people golf club or something. Yikes.

I read this magazine nearly cover to cover every month. They do highlight many interesting people and worthy philanthropic causes, and I enjoy the production value. However, there is a certain relentless celebration of snobbish excess that makes it seem, at times, like the editors are either tone deaf or have a bit of a subversive sense of humor. You read some of this stuff and you think “ok, this writer is certainly in on the joke and knows full well how insane this is” but then I’m not sure because the EIC comes across as incredibly vapid and unbearable, hilariously jewel-obsessed, like a villain from a children’s cartoon or something.

^^ I kinda like Town & Country (& Tatler) for that reason. Even if I disagree, I feel like they're a self-aware holdout of socialite excess, aspiration & glamour.

Laura Dern is one of the most elegant actresses of our times. She is an actor's actor - not always pretty but devoted to her part and intelligent. Not my favorite cover of her but glad she's getting covers though not sure this is the right mag for her?
