This is the latest Devil Wears Prada inspired TV show coming in the Fall of '06.

Ugly Betty
Premieres Thursday, September 28 @ 8/7c

In the superficial world of high fashion, image is everything. Styles come and go and the only constants are wafer-thin beauties who wear it. Where could a girl who is less than pretty and a little bit pudgy possibly fit in?

If you knew Betty Suarez, you'd see how sweet, intelligent and hard-working she is. Few people ever get to know her because in the world of fashion, Betty is the oversized square peg, in the petite round hole. But finally, her looks and lack of fashion sense are going to be an asset. When publishing mogul Bradford Meade hands the reigns of his fashion magazine, Mode, over to his son Daniel, he specifically hires Betty as his son's new assistant - mostly because she's the only woman in NYC who Daniel won't sleep with. Repulsed at first, Betty will win him over with her efficiency. Neither of them really knows the ins and outs of the fashion world, but the two of them are a formidable team against the label-wearing sharks who will do anything to see them fail. That includes many couture co-workers with botoxed smiles on their faces and knives behind their Galliano backs.

Executive Producer Salma Hayek and the creator of Urban Legend brings the Latino television phenomenon to an English-speaking audience. America Ferrera (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) and Eric Mabius (The L Word) are the Working Girl couple who tackle the colorful, cutthroat world of fashion head on.

Cast
Mark Indelicato, Tony Plana, Ana Ortiz, Ashley Jensen, America Ferrera, William Abadie, Alan Dale, Eric Mabius, Vanessa Williams, Michael Urie, Becki Newton

I really want to see this. I love America Ferrera, and I know that it's based on a telenovela, so hopefully it'll be good!

Perhaps said movie helped to make this story American audience-friendly and perfect for a launch now, but it's not inspired by the movie considering it's a spin-off of the hugely popular latin (either mexican or colombian, I can't remember) version that came long before the devil wears prada...

It's kind of already watered down though. The original Betty was actually really ugly, in the promos I've seen America's look isn't nearly so bad! ^_^

very similar to the Devil Wears Prada novel, tho. Lauren published hers in 2003 and the Colombian soap opera debut in 1999.

the Ugly Betty [originally Colombian] was funny sometimes...but yes, they were incredibly ugly  , which was good cause it only made it more realistic. it wasnt a comedy i should mention..just funny drama, whatever the term is.

It will be interesting to see what they do with this American version, this has been the most popular soap opera in Colombia, was sold around the world and now many countries have their own version, like Spain, India, Israel, Germany, Greece, Russia, Mexico, The Netherlands etc etc and now the US.

ok smartarse, I take back my whole "you can't compare this to the devil wears prada, betty la fea came long before, blah blah blah"...

it was a mini-version of the movie, they even used the exact same music :ninja:

i watched it last night and they played it pretty safe, sticking to plot that general public would understand, interested in, etc. vanessa williams as an overtanned, botox-injecting villain is kind of funny - i hope they don't water it down too much. and oh salma hayak's telenova appearances were priceless haha.

I kinda feel bad on how ugly they made her look... God, dress sense!!

I liked the big poncho she wore....haha that made me laugh.

I didn't know this show started out in colombia

I saw the original (the colombian ) it was funny, it was a really famous soap opera in latin america

Although the main idea of the American version is practically the same, the whole story isn't, in the original she didn't have a sister, her mom was alive, no nephew of course, the main male character had a girlfriend which is Betty's enemy, etc etc...a lot of things are different in this version but I think America plays a good Betty and I'm giving this show a chance.^_^

oh i saw this last night, it's funny and entertaining. I saw the original version long time ago. I'd say that it's the same in terms of concept but they differ in castings. Anyways, it's funny!

I missed it last week...hopefully I'll be able to watch it this week becuase it sounds like its worth watching

Anyone catch the resemblance between the dead editor named fey and anna wintour? Hilarious

That Fabia designer reminded me of Donatella  "stupido! stupido!"
I like this show it's cute and funny. Kind of reminded me of another spanish soap "La Fea Mas Bella" but not quite the same plot.

I noticed that too! There were a lot of similarities--- working for a magazine, fetching food for a mean boss, missing someone's birthday.... still, I liked it and will definitely tune in next week!
