Just have to say out of all the decades of the 20th century that our view of beauty/fashion had changed so much between 1960 to 1970. I guess so much was happening during this time frame from politics to music, that it dramatically evolved the way we dressed in such a short period of time, not to mention Diana was probably an editor who was so “with it” during her tenure.

^^^ Civil rights of women and POC were the catalysts for that socio-political shift away from conservatism to liberation from 1965 - 1975, that changed how not just women, but interestingly enough, how men were also influenced by this progression. Just looking at Andy Warhol’s early to mid-60s shots, everyone was dressed so conservatively, even if they were on the fringe of pop culture. But that change of style in fashion mid-70s liberation back to staunch conservatism of the 80s was also equally another interesting youthquake. The general populace were likely less supportive and sympathetic to the activisms of that time: Gay rights and AIDS-activism; Pro-choice; anti-censorship and environmentalism. To be an activists for all any of these issues was being an outlaw. The hostility was from a majority— including women and POC. (And this is why despite the Norma Desmond caricature Madonna’s become lately, that she was proudly in the frontline of fire with the gay activists, and quietly raising and donating her earnings to AIDS research without any fanfare [unlike now when everybody has to document their every charitable effort…], is why I still cherish this woman. Andy wrote that at a time when everybody was visibly afraid of even being in the same room as someone with AIDS, she was sharing and eating a chocolate Easter Bunny with her BFF Martin, who had full-blown AIDS at the time. I doubt any of the pop girls these days would be so brave.)

The mood of that era was translated appropriately in the fashions and its presentations: Hard, aggressive, excessive, predatory, loud, gaudy… Mid-80s to late-80s fashion was hideous, frankly. I can appreciate how unlike any of the decades that came before it was and as an angry reaction, but it was ugly AF LOL It’s a testament to Emmanuelle’s talent that despite how much I loathe 80s-fashion, she has come out on top by making this style her signature for her Vogue.
