I love all these old Vogue threads. Thank you a million times for posting these.

It’s fascinating as I’ve gone through all the 30’s issues into these early 40’s ones to see how immediate the transition of style happened. It’s a subtle difference, I suppose, but this being my favorite period, I feel particularly attuned to the change. 1934-1939 is just UNTOUCHABLE. The absolute height of style - and I would venture to say the pinnacle of human, cultural achievement. Something about that period’s fascination with the past - revivals of Greco-Roman, Medieval, Renaissance, Rococo, etc - but filtered through the lens of a super rigorous, severe, progressive futurism…all that deco shine…skyscrapers, trains, cars, planes, cinema…

Obsessed.

But then 1940 hits - maybe it’s the effect of war - and things change. Less futurism, sensuality and dazzle and more practicality and daywear. And you start to see the very small seeds of 1950’s twee being planted here and there. And I hate the 50’s.
