Review: 177 Pages, which is VERY thin for a seasonal magazine!
Index pages, showcasing accessories in a fresh way. Most of it is not to my taste, but they've hit the mark with Balenciaga's blue pump. The craftsmanship of that shoe is splendid. The best part of V is always the front section and accompanying copy. They've somehow struck a balance between not too short that it looks like a senseless splurb, and not too long that it could be a full on feature. Heroes generally focus not only on the established celebrity or artist, but also on their current or upcoming project. So in a sense it's like a 'guide' on what to see, read, listen to etc. Highlights include a review on the new Amy Winehouse photobook by her close friend Blake Wood, Jamie Lee Curtis for the new Halloween movie, Cat Power & Lenny Kravitz and their new albums. There's a small calendar spotlighting events which the magazine deem to be hip, and a few more pages reserved for fashion drops and must haves.
More music and film! The director of Assassination Nation, a dark comedy in the vein of Jawbreaker, interviews his leading ladies Suki Waterhouse, Odessa Young, Abra and Hari Nef in a short Q&A. The girls left me confused because on the one hand they kept preaching about how the Kardashians are manufactured, everyone's really sensitive right now, and too quick to jump on the 'cancel' brigade, yet with their very last question they all praise the Internet, how it generates discussion, and Hari (I think) proceeds to 'call out and cancel' the current American president. Which, I mean, LOL. Anyway, the next to it picture looks ok. I very nearly didn't recognise Hari because her face looks really puffy in that shot.
Focus on two new pop stars, and 4 Hollywood it-girls. Kristine Froseth is among that group. Two new models, Kennah Lau and Imade Ogbewi spread over four pages of fluorescent fashion brings the front section to a close.
This is precisely what's lacking with Tonchi's W and even Anna's Vogue! V's entire section more than kept me entertained not only with the copy and happenings, but also the care with which the images were shot and styled. In this specific instance it was actually the main features which seemed sort of hollow and senseless. Normally it's the other way around.
Jorja Smith (10 pages)
Photographer: Solve Sundsbo
Stylist: Anne Trevelyan
Hair: Syd Hayes
Make up: Lisa Eldridge
Cast: Jorja Smith
Essentially their jewellery edit. Jorja's got an stunning profile, and Sundsbo put that to great use. The last shot is with a doubt the best for me, looks very Queen of the Damned. Thank God the text is not much because personally speaking, Jorja comes across as a bit big for her boots. But I like her voice so will just avoid all interviews. I think a British Vogue feature or even cover is inevitable within the next year.

Cast: Christy Turlington, Joan Smalls, Carolyn Murphy, Natasha Poly, Alek, Wek, Karen Elson, Anja Rubik, Doutzen Kroes, Guinevere van Seenus, Karlie Kloss, Andreea Diaconu, Malgosia Bela and Kendall Jenner
Lots of random models in this lineup. Definitely could have been trimmed to make place for another edit. Colls photography, however nice, gets old fast and therefore not strong enough for such a long edit.
Some Like It Hot (12 pages)
Photographer: Simon Eeles
Stylist: George Cortina
Hair: Shay Ashual
Make up: Kanako Tanase
Cast: Daphne Groeneveld
The type of edit which would've been done justice by Ellen von Unwerth. Visually it looks like a combination of two different edits - Lotta Volkova/Johnny Dufort forced quirkiness vs a series of sensual and moody sunlit shots.
