Valentino gives couture world tour for next summer
PARIS (AFP) - Italian designer Valentino highlighted the global reach of the fashion industry with his haute couture collection for spring-summer 2005, a tribute to the world's greatest cities.
Acknowledging that his clients come from "every corner of the globe", Valentino conjured up 37 gowns, dresses and suits named after the "most beautiful places in the world" from Seville to Shanghai.
The couturier mounted giant projection screens on the walls of the ornate Fine Arts School on the French capital's Left Bank, so that he could match each outfit with images of the corresponding city or country and accompanying music.
Stately supermodel Erin O'Connor opened the show in a slim black taffeta skirt suit with beige embroidery that recalled a matador's costume, transporting the crowd in the chilly Parisian venue to sunny Seville.
Valentino's suits emphasized his attention to detail and love of the feminine form -- his "Hong Kong" ivory wool crepe skirt suit was slit high in the back, embroidered with fine lace and fitted snugly to the body.
The Italian designer found inspiration for his signature red number in Bangkok, concocting a sexy sleeveless silk tunic with embroidery along the neckline and hem, and pairing it with full trousers and a stole.
For the actresses and pop stars that so often wear his creations on the red carpet, Valentino offered sultry siren gowns, including an elegant long black silk charmeuse dress with full-length gloves -- from Los Angeles, of course.
He created a flowing one-shoulder chiffon dress fading from red to yellow to remind him of the Stromboli volcano, while a purple and green gown conjured up images of tropical Maui blooms.
British supermodel Naomi Campbell closed the show in a long black tulle and lace dress with a glittering gold and silver embroidered bodice -- the Italian designer's tribute to Milan and legendary opera star Maria Callas.
Sparkling round-toed shoes, tiny crystal-encrusted minaudiere purses and chunky brooches with pearls completed the glamorous Valentino look.
Haute couture week continues Tuesday, with Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel and Christian Lacroix taking center stage. France's Jean-Paul Gaultier and Lebanon's Elie Saab wrap up the three-day couture whirlwind on Wednesday.
