V125 NEXT GEN: VAUGHAN OLLIER

“Last summer, my sister and I learned to surf on Portugal’s secluded Algarve coast. I’ll never forget the rush of standing up and falling into the waves. Really invigorating!” -Vaughan Ollier

May 2, 2020
A new generation of supermodels is here. They are taking over the world's runways, serving looks on magazine covers, and becoming industry muses. These models are present both physically and digitally in today's world. With summer just around the corner, they prepare for some well-deserved rest and relaxation—even in the face of COVID-19.

Opening the industry-changing Marc Jacobs SS20 fashion show, Vaughan Ollier puts the fun back into fashion. The ‘Texan-Australian’ model photographed by Inez and Vinoodh and styled by George Cortina is our next cover star for V125. Being a creative individual, Ollier loves to get lost in the moment—doing so on some of the world's most exclusive runways. V talked with Vaughan Ollier about her hidden talents, what it's been like living in New York throughout the pandemic, and her hopes to practice her surfing skills this summer.

SH20010-VMA-13i-IV-RGB.jpg

V Where are you from?

VAUGHAN OLLIER Coffs Harbor, Australia, and Dallas, Texas. Two different sides of the world and two very different cultures. I loved having that different world view traveling between the two countries.

V How would you describe the summer of your dreams?

VO Long days with little to no responsibilities, and nights where you dance the night away.

V What is the ultimate summer song?

VO "Off to the Races" by Lana Del Rey.

V What is on your summer reading list?

VO Number one is The Testaments by Margaret Atwood. I have been obsessed with Offred and The Handmaid’s Tale and can’t wait to read what happens next to all the characters in The Testaments.

V What is your favorite summer memory?

VO My favorite summer memory is definitely learning how to surf in Portugal last summer. I had an instructor who brought my sister and me to the most stunning and secluded beach on the Algarve coast. We were the only people on the beach. The water was warm and the sun was beating down on my back. I’ll never forget the rush of standing up on the board and the feeling of falling into the waves—really invigorating!

V When you’re not modeling, what are you up to?

VO I do love socializing and going out dancing but you don’t really know me unless you know my love of Pilates. Pilates is so good for the body and mind, I can literally plank for days.

V Do you have a hidden talent? What would people be surprised to hear?

VO My hidden talent? I’m excellent at cartwheels. I have been known to break out some cartwheels when the time is right and when there’s enough space to land [laughs].

V How would you describe the current wave of models/generation?

VO I’d say that the current wave of models, as well as my generation, are very aware and involved in society today. We want to be here and explore what we can do to not only help ourselves but try to better society or the world in some way. I know many girls that try to use modeling more as a platform and way to grow/advocate as opposed to just treating modeling as a job.

V How do you feel in front of the camera?

VO In front of the camera I really feel like a conduit for the moment. I have been so lucky to work with incredible people that are all so creative and talented and I just reflect that moment and electricity. All the people I’ve worked with have made me feel more alive and I think it shows in the film.

V What do you hope for this year?

VO I hope to grow more and develop as a person. I’m still trying to figure who I am and my role in the world. This year feels extremely important in terms of what’s occurring environmentally, socially politically-truly in all aspects. I hope I can find how I can make a difference in this pivotal moment and change with society for the better.

V How did the onset of this year’s public health crisis change your outlook on life and/or work?

VO You know this is crazy, I live in New York, I’ve seen the city shut down, my industry shutdown, and I wondered what next? How do we get through this...But I am hopeful because now we are all working together as a global community to help each other stay safe. People are eager to share their own tips, tricks, recipes, ideas with the rest of the world virtually into their homes. It is beautiful to see this global collaboration. We are all in this fight together, and even though people can’t support each other in person, we are seeing it happen online. Never have I felt so connected with others than I do now, and that makes me incredibly hopeful for the future!

V What have you learned (or what do you think people can learn) while in solitude / practicing social distance?

VO This is a huge opportunity. Instead of fighting this quarantine & feeling bored, let’s try to embrace it. Let’s use this time be creative at home, and in ways, we never thought possible

V Many people are reevaluating travel plans… If you were to be in one place for most of the summer, where would that be?

VO Ideally, I’d love to visit my family in Australia and spend some time on the coast, go to Byron Bay, then visit the Great Barrier Reef. I really need to get in the sun and surf this summer.

ISABELLA BOREMAN
MARC JACOBS left an imprint on the world last season. His feverish performance for SS20 saw a high-spirited and frivolous display where models broke the fourth wall and became at one with the audience. From innocent winks, blowing kisses and singing along to the assauging lyrics, Jacobs had mastered a spectacle that reminded the fashion industry to pause amongst the chaos and served an honest reminder to sometimes just make it fun. Marking her first debut catwalk, model VAUGHAN OLLIER, shares her introductions to modelling, working with STEVEN MEISEL for the house's latest campaign, and how to survive fashion week.

Name: Vaughan Elizabeth Ollier
Age: 23
Hometown: Coffs Harbor, Australia/Dallas, Texas
Party trick: I really love to dance and move and just lose myself in the moment. So if there’s a dance floor you better believe I will start doing everything from jazz hands, to voguing, the running man and really random splits. I’m not an extremely talented dancer but I am the most enthusiastic on the dance floor.

LOVE: How did you get into modelling ?

Vaughan Elizabeth Ollier: It was my 17th birthday and I was walking around the mall with my friends in Dallas, Texas. I accidentally pushed into a woman outside a store and she turned out to be the owner of a modelling agency and she asked me to come in for a meeting. I was always in school but once I finished university in Australia I wanted to try out modelling and explore my creative side.

LOVE: Who are your modelling icons and why?

VEO: TWIGGY, KATE MOSS, and NAOMI CAMPBELL. They are all such strong and smart women that had to work incredibly hard to get to where they are today. I find their work ethic really inspiring.

LOVE: What was the first fashion image that inspired you to become a model?

VEO: Either the close up photo of Twiggy from the '60s with the big eyelashes or the photo of Audrey Hepburn smoking a cigarette in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I loved black and white photos as kid they were always so dramatic and enchanting.

LOVE: What has been your proudest moment to date?

VEO: Opening Marc Jacobs SS20 show last season, I had never walked a big show or worked with any big designer before. I was so nervous when I found out I was opening the show-literally shaking was shaking like a leaf. The inspiration for my look was Shelley Duvall so I channelled all the drama from my inner Shelley and sauntered down the runway leading the pack of girls and charged straight through the audience. It was such an amazing experience working with Marc and the team.

LOVE: If you could change anything about the industry what would it be?

VEO: I’d like to make people remember that fashion is fun. What we do and what we are a part of is fun and creative, so every once and a while we should all stop and laugh and just enjoy the moment. Fashion shouldn’t always be taken so seriously-we are making art!

LOVE: What do you do when you’re not modelling?

VEO: Pilates! You don’t really know me unless you know my love of Pilates. I take classes, and I studied for my instructor certification a few months ago so I spend 90% of my time when I’m not modeling either teaching or taking pilates classes.

LOVE: What would you be if you weren’t a model?

VEO: So I would probably be in Law school or getting my masters in Social Research. I’m fascinated by social justice and would love to work for the United Nations or a non profit that helps support underprivileged women.

LOVE: Tell us something no one else knows about you?

VEO: I am a huge nerd, and people are shocked when I tell them I was one of the captains of my high school Mock Trial team haha.

LOVE: What’s your top tip for surviving fashion weeks?

VEO: Sleep, lots of coffee, and when fashion month is over dance your heart out!

LOVE: Was was the best part of working on the Marc Jacobs campaign?

VEO: Working with everyone there! It was really amazing you could feel the creative energy from everyone in the room. Between Marc, STEVEN, KATIE, GUIDO, PAT and us girls you couldn’t have wished for better vibes on set.

LOVE: How did you feel in your MJ look on set?

VEO: I felt on top of the world. Really it was an experience I will never forget dancing to rock and roll in that gold dress with the team cheering, and Steven snapping and dancing with me-seriously phenomenal.

LOVE: Do you have an on set story you could share with us?

VEO: I don’t get emotional but that day was really incredible. Working with Marc, Steven, Katie, Guido, Pat and all the other models was amazing I knew we had made something special. So when we wrapped and I left set I got home and literally started crying tears of absolute joy and just happiness. It was really amazing, and I feel so lucky to have those memories and be apart of the MJ family.

LOVE: What’s next for you?

VEO: I want to keep exploring the world and finding out who I am and what I can do. It’s a crazy time in society and I’d like to focus on how I can grow creatively, and keep developing as a person.

LOVE: If you could host a dinner party with five people dead or alive who would you invite?

VEO: Barack and MICHELLE OBAMA, Adele, Ellen, and Joaquin Phoenix. I think that would be a great mix, music, politics and entertainment-it would definitely be an interesting night.

LOVE: What’s the biggest sacrifice you’ve had to make to become a model?

VEO: Sleep? And probably a routine. It’s hard to keep a daily routine when every day is new, different and in a new place. But that’s also what makes modeling so exciting, it’s that lack of stagnation.

Her book is really impressive. I've always liked her (I remember her early days at GIRL Mgmt Paris) but I'm just realizing how good she's doing. Anyway, here are some digitals...
