My favorite part:
Many don't consider Tyra Banks a supermodel because of her small career in high fashion. She has mostly done commercial modeling. She has had one 1 Vogue cover, while supermodels like Christy Turlington have over 70. Banks has only had around 15 fashion magazine covers, while the rest are mostly Men's magazines like Maxim and GQ. Tyra Banks has only had 20 plus magazine covers, and the majority of them aren't top fashion magazines. Supermodels like Niki Taylor have graced hundred of magazine covers. For about 10 years of career, she has done very little modeling, the majority being Victoria's Secret. She has also done more work on television and film. Many people criticise her for being called a "supermodel" when her credits don't make her one. Unlike the great supermodels (i.e. Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Beverly Peele, Cindy Crawford..), Tyra was never the muse for top fashion designers, never graced over 100 fashion magazines, and has gained fame by commercial modeling, which is not considered artistic like high fashion. Rachel Hunter and other commercial models are also criticised by many for being dubbed a supermodel, because of their small high fashion career.

^ I think she is. I think she belongs to the twenty biggest models of this day, so for today's standards she's a super IMO.

I agree with MakeupJunkie.

I think there's a difference between "Today's" supermodels (the top 20) and Supermodels that will always be remembered.

Twiggy, Kate Moss, The Trinity, Cindy Crawford are great examples.

Natasha Poly (though I love her), any random VS model, etc. are not.

Daria is coming really close in my opinion.

Maybe even Gemma. Maybe Gisele, because she ruled those 5 years at the end of the 90's.

But it should be a very small, exclusive list, no more than 20 all-time supermodels.

I think Daria, Gemma, and Gisele are the cloest models to compare to the supermodels of the super era. Although, when it comes to namewise, the VS and SI girls are much more known. i.e. Every1 knows Karolina, Gisele, Adriana, Ana B, Marisa, Petra, Carolyn,...

This descussion comes up so much on just about every thread in the Ect of Modeling section! As far as I'm concerned, the world would be a better place if we had seven supermodels and left it at that. The rest are just 'Highly Successful Top Models.' The day of the supermodel is over, RIP :flower:

My Seven Supers

Christy, Linda, Naomi, Cindy, Claudia, Gisele, and Kate.

[I add Kate and Gisele because they are the only models known to the general public today that not only had an extensive high fashion career, but also both have mainstream careers, like VS and Rimmel]
