def ebay. because you can find great things from sellers who don't know what they have or how to describe it. if you know vintage clothing, then its easy to find treasures hidden in the search. it seems people who have their own vintage site know the value of certain pieces, and they ask for top dollar. its the same as going to thrift town versus decades or american rag. sometimes though, if you have to have an item, it doesnt matter where you found or how much you payed for something.
also, its easier to search for exactly what you're looking for. you just get better results all around with ebay.
I dont think i would really refer either, i enjoy looking for things in real shops, it feels more personal. plus i find it better trying clothes on before i buy them...
I mostly shop ebay these days. I have found amazing finds. I have really lucked out withthe size issue.
I have bought mostly fancy 1920s dresses in shops, but definately 90% of vintage shopping has been done on ebay for the last 10 years! (jeeze, since ebay started pretty much)
I have found everything from shoes, tops, dresses, accessories, jewelry, from all eras!
I like buying from an expert dealer. I can return it for any reason, and I know I'm getting an accurate description from someone who really knows what they're talking about. And the prices, even though high, are fair and still competitive with new stuff--most especially since prices this fall have gone into the stratosphere. In general, the problem with eBay tends to be condition. Also, an expert dealer has contacts I don't and never will.
Granted, I tend to be less of a patient shopper, I don't look for a bargain (though I'm thrilled if I find one), my focus is more on being sure I get the absolutely best item that I will never tire of. In the past when I've shopped sales, that's where I've made mistakes. One great decision at full price is light years better than two mistakes at half price ... at least, that's my reasoning
since cuts form older clothes are sometimes a little strange for my body, i prefer trying my garments on before i purchase them, but you can't beat ebay for price.
Vintage = stores
Used but modern = eBay
I think you have to really know vintage to have success with ebay. and its a good idea to measure your own similar garments to compare to what the item for sales measurement's are. also, ask a lot of questions from the seller before you bid. I've had a few things not fit, but overall, the goodies I've acquired far outweigh the mistakes.
also, I've made good profit selling the stuff that doesn't work out to stores like buffalo or wasteland.
i sell vintage on ebay. when i was a buyer i had a few bad experiences. and i know what it is like to win an item and to look forward to it [!!!!!!] arriving and hopefully being perfect for you. so now i try to be really clear with descriptions and measurements. i think vintage sellers or high end sellers take more care in the selling of their items. and i thoroughly read feedback of buyers and sellers now. ebay is so much fun, and i am really pleasantly surprised that 99% of my buyers are honest and nice.
I sell vintage on ebay as well so I do have to say it's a excellent place for some good finds. Expecially if you are looking cheap and you are a dealer or collector.
Swapmeets are great too for one of a kind peices and for trying to get good bargains. I can usually haggle anyone
