Ken Russell - Teddy Girls

Yay! I found an appropriate thread to put these. I wasn't sure if Ken Russell (the photographer of this series) merited his own thread with title and everything since he's not actually a fashion photographer and these were taken more as a social documentation of girls on the street indulging in a fashion trend rather than showing off couture with models.

Teddy girls were, I suppose contemporaries of the 50s Teddy Boy craze although there seems to be a less encompassing dress code for the former. According to wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teddy_Boy#_note-1
Teddy girls adopted a style similar to Teddy boys; they wore items such as drape jackets, hobble skirts, long plaits, straw boater hats, cameo brooches, espadrilles and coolie hats. Later they adopted the American fashions of toreador pants, voluminous circle skirts, and hair in ponytails. Film director Ken Russell took a series of photos of such girls in late 1954 and early 1955 in the East End of London and Notting Hill.[2]
Anyway, here are some of the photos Ken Russell took for the series. I love them and think that the girls, who do look so very young and inching just the tiniest bit on the trying too hard side, are great. Expressive and hopeful and youthful. Faux-attitude, really. :D

:clap:Thanks for all the recent posts everyone!! (Especially loveloveloved lovelovelove's "smoking on the steps" (2nd one) and drifter-sister's "teddy girls")

SusanSuperstar and other future posters - please remember that this thread is for non-celebrities only. There is an "Icons of the Past" forum under "StarStyle", and the pictures you posted would be more appropriate there. :flower:

And in other news, I love "Newsies" style! This shot is from 1908 (click for the 'big picture'!)
