Virgil Abloh Joins Louis Vuitton as New Menswear Designer
PARIS, France — Virgil Abloh, the Off-White designer who came to prominence as Kanye West's creative director, has been appointed as the next artistic director of men’s wear at Louis Vuitton, one of the oldest and most powerful European houses in the luxury business.
The appointment, widely rumoured in recent months, follows the departure of Kim Jones, Abloh’s predecessor at Louis Vuitton, in January. Last week, it was announced that Jones would become the men's designer at LVMH-owned Christian Dior, replacing Kris van Assche.
“I feel elated. This opportunity to think through what the next chapter of design and luxury will mean at a brand that represents the pinnacle of luxury was always a goal in my wildest dreams. And to show a younger generation that there is no one way anyone in this kind of position has to look is a fantastically modern spirit in which to start," said Abloh in a statement.
The designer confirmed the appointment early this morning by posting a picture of a Louis Vuitton monogram trunk with the initials “LV” to his Instagram account, without a caption.
