According to The New York Times:
Fairchild Publications announced yesterday that it would close its luxury lifestyle magazines Vitals Man and Vitals Woman, after just over a year of publication.
The statement came one day after Condé Nast announced it would bring Fairchild and its former parent, Advance Publications, under the umbrella of Condé Nast Publications.
The consolidation on Monday brought the total number of shopping magazines under Condé Nast Publications to five, including the Condé Nast magazines Cargo, Lucky and Domino.
The magazines have been largely successful: Lucky hit a circulation of a million in less than five years, while Domino raised its rate base, the circulation a magazine guarantees to advertisers, to 450,000, from 400,000 in August.
The final issue of Vitals Woman will hit newsstands Oct. 11; the last issue of Vitals Man is currently on newsstands.
The two magazines, both with a controlled circulation of 200,000, had alternated seasonal issues since the debut of Vitals Man in August 2004. Hilary Swank was on the cover of the Vitals Woman debut in March 2005.
Mary Berner, the president of Fairchild Publications, dismissed speculation that the two announcements were related, saying that a leak to The New York Post had prompted the announcement.
"We'd been talking about it for over a month and made the decision a while ago, but we wanted to separate it and announce it next week," she said.
"I made this decision myself with the management a couple of weeks ago. It's one of those hard ones because it's such a good magazine."
