Vogue Hommes F/W 2019.20 : Braien Vaiksaar & Stas Zienkiewicz by Willy Vanderperre

Oh how I wish I could be a skinny and pale looking farmers boy, just hanging out with my equally skinny and pale looking buddy. Thanks for bringing me the fantasy Vogue Hommes International.

Olivier Lalanne is as much annoying as Emmanuelle Alt. Roitfeld used to really oversee Vogue Hommes back then. Such a pity.

This and and the AnOther cover are just proof that Willy puts in zero effort at this point. His work is just depressing at this point, and now that everyone is doing this kind of photography his work is just irrelevant, just another photo lost in a sea of drab, wannabe nonchalant photos.

This is the one "Men's fashion" magazine, that has the capability to be sexy, provocative, and interesting. This dull, children of the corn cover, is none of those things. Why would anyone rush to buy this?

It does feel like a Fall issue cover! I was hoping for something more, but I do like what they have here. While it is not their best cover, once again they have consistently been one of the few men's magazines where they feature models on their covers, and I do appreciate that in this time.

It’s not awful. At least it’s no another brick wall.

Very (intentionally?) depressing, but a least the guys look like models. And if I strain hard enough to evoke some generosity to Willy, the shot is a pleasant enough portrait of a mood reminiscent of one from a Flemish painting.

The cover editorial is amazing. I really like it. Also Black is the concept for the whole issue, and all the clothes are either black or the photo is filtered black and white. By far the strongest issue for a long time.

Can you post?

Thank you for the editorial!

I quite like it. It looks a lot like the new Prada campaign but there's a certain mood in it that I quite like.

I am also glad that the editorials are about black clothes rather than black and white images which they did a lot for their last summer issue.

Willy is a non-event for commercial photography but this cover and editorial I like, it's ascetic but in an atmospheric, artful way.

^^^ It's the only story in the entire issue with any tone resembling atmosphere, sadly. Because ricepaper-thin styling aside, Willy’s story is at least mood-evocative of a sort of Ingmar Bergman cinematic appeal, even if it’s only at the most superficial level. The other remaining stories resemble more aimless portraits that are just a jumble of shots with nothing to say. What really stops Willy’s story (and it's likely his strongest in a long long long time) from being solid is that the guys seemed to have been shot in studio and digitally inserted into the surrounding. It’s particularly evident with the Black model since the lighting is so off on him in relation to the surroundings.

For anyone who’s yearning for the days of the archetypical masculine models like Jarrod, you’ll likely weep at all the neutered, twinkage casting here. Not a whiff of testosterone-heat and unabashed male sexploitation. They should rebrand this as Vogue Twink. Cuz not a man in sight :sigh:

Gone are the days when Men's Magazines can present a fantasy while at the same time make it ideally accessible.

Come on, who dresses up like that on a daily basis, more so during Autumn/Winter?

Also I've noticed, men's magazines have shifted and limited itself to a more fluid/androgynous styling, repetitive corporate/formal wear, and swim wear looks for summer. I mean is that bad? No. The problem is that if that's all you'll do, then in a way you alienate those who do not dress up that way. You'll barely see a story that reflects how people dress up today.
