i still don't get the essence of THE AMERICANS issue, is that just because of the eagle, or the surfer? or the Hollywood sign and the flags???

i think this series doesn't look like an editorial, rather just photographer's portfolio. and this makes me wonder what is the purpose of these images? they definitely incorporate some symbolic replicas on american society and mass-culture, but apart from some stylistic tricks (the M-painted face etc) and obvious signs of US national memorabilia and symbols it doesn't get closer than that. lonely boys, surfers, some bondage-geared anonymous heroes (which seem to come from ms. Roitfeld imagination) do they really embody the idea of anything merely 'American' (i know, i know, surfers!). i don't say these images are not beautiful (they are), and the styling is sort of fantastic (more Panos than Nicola i'd dare to say). but somehow it feels these are beautiful images for the sake of beautiful images. at the end such an attitude feels snobbish for me.

i kind of got the same impression than anyone else ...

but you have to consider than the purely 'portfolios' images (the b/w images) are, imo, here just to illustrate the current researchs of HS in L.A. ...

the fashion story itself seems to illustrate a certain suffocation and weight all this american symbols have on the LA younghood ... and that it's hard for them to give it away ...
what is also interesting to notice is that HS recently showed that London is very community centered ... when there in LA he seems to underline a certain loneliness (not individualism, but loneliness ... which is different, imo) ....

but to quote RG, maybe "i'm just talking craps" ....
