Vogue Mexico September 2015 : Joan Smalls by Russell James

Also agree about the last shot. Scrolling from bottom to top I knew this would be either Bensimon or Feurer. We've seen this type of stories many times before, but with the autumnal lighting and sea this really looks fresh.

Really nice ed from Bensimon. The water's still here but at least it's different, I like it!
And I agree, the cover should have been one of those shots.

Gille´s editorial is better than Russell James´ but come on the stylist who took charge of the story should be fired ASAP it´s awful. Joan looks good at least but yeah overall this magazine is big fail.

Why wasn't Gilles Bensimon's story used for the cover? I'm in agreement that the last shot of Joan would've made a superb cover (far more superior than the one we got). Plus, it's refreshing to see Bensimon not shooting on some tropical beach. This particular edit is the highlight of the entire issue, without a doubt!

it is rare these days but i dont get tired of joan! she always gives something new

i don't think Kelly Talamas is a good EIC...they waste all the top models talents....month after month...they are a thousand times worse than vogue Spain...

Gilles editorial is breathtaking. This is why Joan is a top model! I never get tired of seeing her.

I do think Gilles should have had the cover story and I agree with everyone that the last shot would have mad an amazing cover shot!

No offense meant but Russell James just isn't a Vogue photographer. He is better suited for super commercial advertising. There's no glamour here, no luxury, no aspiration. Same with his Adriana Lima editorial.

This magazine deserves so much better.

^I completely agree 100%. Russell is perfect for commercial and sexy stuff but NOT high fashion and not for Vogue. This editorial is a complete mess and I agree : no aspiration or dream, just a model with clothes, I see no story here. Having said all of this, the first and last shots would have made much better covers than the 3 Vogue Mexico has chosen lol... The EIC is no good either if you ask me...

^ Okay it's Vogue Mexico. Are you honestly expecting Meisel-level sh*t here? The cover and accompanying editorial are pretty much on-par for what this magazine can produce IMO. It's a tertiary edition of Vogue, for god's sake!!

^No need for a high profile photographer. Even new talent can produce something better and more appropriate than this. I agree James is too commercial.

This is not an excuse: every Vogue edition in the world has to step up to the plate. Whether it´s US Vogue or Vogue Portugal or Vogue Ukraine, they have to be able to pick the right teams to end up with great fashion editorials and covers. Demarchelier or Testino or Meisel or Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott can shoot editorials for any editions worldwide so the magazines have to decide to hire them or not and if they can´t economically speaking then they should hire other photographers who are specialized in high fashion. There are many many great fashion photographers who are more than capable of doing much better.

Russell James is an amazing photographer and I like this shoots, but to me he is not Vogue material. So saying Vogue México is a tertiary edition of Vogue is actually not acceptable to excuse the magazine of producing something so amateurish. Instead of hiring bad editors or doing useless shoots and having poor writers on their teams they need to get their act together. Vogue magazine has a prestige to maintain, do you honestly think this is VOGUE? Nope.

Maybe Vogue Mexico is keeping something special for their anniversary issue... Just maybe

and that set...so amateurish....maybe with a conceptual dead concepto will works but of course for another magazine....in the past they managed to produce decent content but i think the editor in chief is responsible to decide if they run this or re-shoot....or tu put gilles on the cover....what a waste....at this point vogue spain is so much better

What do you mean?

Vogue Mexico celebrated their 15th birthday, the last year. and I don't think now celebrate a new anniversary. if anything at 20 or 30. Who knows

The November or December issues are better than any other month, at least for Vogue Mexico, for example Scarlett Johansson and Magdalena Frackowiak in 2013.

I love Magdalena but all her Vogue Mexico covers have been tacky. Scarlett's cover was to die for but I feel it's the exception to these covers.

I think this magazine has a lot of potential but... maybe it's just not clicking?
