While Vogue Australia's newest editor welcomed us with sunlight on Hailey Bieber's crotch, Vogue Singapore's newest editor welcomes us with AI images, or an excuse to give us nothing while pretending that it's giving us something that we haven't seen before. They're also audacious for going with the theme of "Roots" while featuring system-generated images as their cover subjects.
Never, not this edition, and not in this country. I'll speak for myself when I say Singapore has given fashion a rude awakening with the censorship and subsequent firing of Norman Tan who granted wasn't at his best at Vogue Singapore. Not nearly as good as he was in Esquire, but all things considered it was quite a shock and completely uncalled for. I'm sure Norman had to be fired to send a clear message for others to toe the line. Anyway, their loss. I believe he's in either in America or Austalia now living his best life? So what if he's an influencer for Toblerone. Better than having your creative expression curbed. I predict quite a few talents in the country will leave soon. As it is Esquire is already being run via Australia.
The last cover made me stare. It's beautiful and the only one that closely aligns with what a Vogue cover should be about. I for one am not remotely interested in this gamification of fashion. I don't know if it's some sort of escapist coping mechanism fashion is using to deal with the very clear lack of talent, creativity and enthusiasm, but it needs to end! Nerd culture and ideals are as toxic and oppressive as the so-called toxic 'bro' masculinity, if not worse. There are two ideals for them, hyper-feminine or hyper-masculine, no inbetween. Gaming culture doesn't belong in fashion.
