Vogue Ukraine July 2016 : Anais Mali & Riley Montana by Hans Neumann

Why Vogue Ukraine covers are so overrated to me?

You're not the only one. I think one of the main reasons VU is so warmly welcomed on TFS is due to how it might speak to the heart of many here. I see it as a DIY cover-version of high-end mags from last decade (Vogue Italia but not only) and they're good enough not to turn it into an unintentional parody. While I'm fine with it (both feeling slightly nostalgic every now and then and being happy when good pictures get available to our eyes), I find it slightly worrying. First, because it seems to tell that other editions of Vogue (or any other big name) are facing troubles to reinvent themselves, take risks, innovate (in terms of aesthetics and choices). And then if people having taste, knowledge and love for fashion photography seem beyond satisfied with this, it could mean we have lowered our standards and expectations, we are more inclined to be thrilled by a beautiful and well-executed imagery channeling our past loves than by something innovative and off the beaten tracks, even when slightly awkward and perfectible.

As for the cover story, I quite like it nonetheless, the color palette is really eye-appealing and I can never get enough of Anais Mali (Riley is gorgeous too). But do my cyrillic skills suck or I read Panama? An editorial inspired by Panama Papers maybe? Haha.

the full title is Geography of style: Cuba, Morocco, Panama, so it's just them trying to be ~exotic~ :D

Thanks for the complete translation, I know what sign makes what sound but have no real clue on what words mean. :P

I could have guessed it would be only "exotic topics". Would have been an interesting thing to try to make an editorial on Panama Papers though, and possibly something Meisel would have done for VI just like what he did with McMenamy and the oil issue for example.

Sorry for the old stuff (This message is not spam, it's for regulate the current threads).
@Ivano

Too much slouching in the cover editorial, but overall it's a nice set of images. My main gripe with these Cuban editorials is that it fails to capture the lively spirit of the country. Only Porter managed to do that. It's all so dour and desolate, like some God-forsaken landscape, which belies what Cuba is all about.

Very keen to see the rest of Karmen's edit. That last shot looks amazing. I'm not overly familiar with An Le, always thought he's more adept at artificially manipulated photography. So this to me feels raw and fresh.

Now that you wrote this I had to look back at the pictures and... (I'm not familiar with An Le's work too but) if this is supposed to be raw, then I'm a little worried. On the first image all I see is Karmen pasted on some outdoor background and that's quite unfortunate as the idea behind the shot is interesting (her outfits plus the tree, lines, textures and colors).

I suppose I should've said natural instead of raw. Actually no, I do find that second shot raw! Haven't seen Carmen like this in ages. What I've seen from An Le in the past was normally very filled with loads of digital and lighting effects.

Well, that was not really your definition of raw that I meant but rather the fact this is raw compared to her other works. I can agree the second one indeed looks closer to what I'd call raw... But I guess we'll have a better idea of the whole thing once the complete editorial will be available to our eyes.

I love every single shot of this editorial ! I'm so happy to see Carmen in it.

not a fan of this, too bad because i love the cast, especially anais

Love the cover, love the cast. Particularly happy for Riley but they both killed it, what a dynamic shot!

That edit of Carmen is gorgeous!

I miss those old times in fashion as well. But with the current state of magazines right now, I just really appreciate Vogue Ukraine's continuous effort to produce something like this. I would take it over those lazy work being produced in bigger magazines right now. <3 Just my opinion. ;) Keep it up, Vogue Ukraine.
