As per usual my scans are far from faultless...the motto is, don't ever try to scan W in an A4 format scanner :rolleye:...

What a great edit! Fantastic casting and SK makes it look so effortless.

Thank you so much for sharing this issue with us all!! :)

stellar issue! i miss 90s, 00 W mag so much.

i remember the first time i picked up a copy of W mag in my dads office and being completely blown away. kate moss and stella lookin all glowy and doe-eyed graced the cover. must've been round '95. there was a soft, youthful sensuality and approachability to that image which was so unlike the other fashion magazine covers id seen and really stood out and captivated me. pretty sure i permanently borrowed this issue.

that ginormous oversized format as a little kid made it a very tactile, sensory experience and to see those details in the clothes, expressions, colours, textures made W unlike any other magazine. but of course, W eventually downgraded and shrunk its glorious size which was really disappointing.

that Paltrow ed beautifully captured her effervescence. she looks so happy and comfortable and like she's enjoying herself and having fun on this shoot. the layout so simple and loose. i'm not thinking 'gee look at the swirly swoopy letter encroaching that actress.' i get a sense of her as a real person and not flashes of 'celebrity editorial,' looking at this. Approachable, inviting, sense of curiosity and wonder i no longer feel with this magazine.

W since late '00 til current tries waaay too hard to be arty with its theatrical, gimmicky custom typefaces which is simply distracting. Freeze Frame is beautiful. they left the images speak for itself unmolested. the Art Direction of W today imo is too self-conscious and over-done. I can sense the effort they put into organizing each page. i often confuse W with Interview. both magazines which really don't pay homage to their roots and worse off for it.

i love seeing Klein's more beachy, less angsty aesthetic for W.
wish he'd do more laid-back, naturalistic shoots like this more often.

He's a very versatile photog and i get tired of only seeing his either
a) super saturated images usually accompanied by some trite 'clever' storyline forced onto 6 pages OR
b) doom and gloom goth, gym rat, sci fi themed editorials.

It'd be so nice to see his beautifully spare shoots in the vein of what he did for 90s HB and even allure.

anyways, thank you for reminding me how great W magazine used to be. can't wait to see the rest.

^ As always, a total joy to read your posts ellastica! Totally agree with you on all counts.

You're in luck RE Mr Klein as I have a little throwback treat for you later...^_^ .

I'm so happy to see
Breathless again, thank you.
